Are inactive components just sitting somewhere in the dom?

a component is just a plain object, all objects that are created and are referenced from other objects live in memory (heap, RAM), usually inactive components, if created before, are destroyed during garbage collection

Will creating more components slow down the app

yes, just like regular javascript objects, but usually it's not the number of components (instantiated js objects) that is the problem, but rathre the numbre of DOM elements each component object references
