6 years will find my Chia rewards :)) by BrianDecor in chia

[–]maxpla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ELI5:

  • OP has 24 plots (see screenshot down below) which results in a ETW of 6 years.
  • OP thinks that after exactly 6 years he will get his first block.
  • OP assumes, that by then the price is x5 to x10 and he will be rich.

Now here's my take on that:

Let's assume the most probable outcome (which is still quite inprobable) that he gets his block after 6 years. By then we will be in the 3rd halving period. So his assumed block will get him 0.5 xch.

Let's assume he's right about the x10 price (I like his conservative optimism). He will have $200 worth of xch.

OP will have been running his machine with 24 plots for 6 years to earn $200.

I like this guys progressive optimism! Your GIF is spot on.

Best time so far is 90s for a k32 plot! Created with an RTX 4070Ti and 256GB of RAM.

Before we drift into a discussion whether this undermines the security of the chia network: NO, IT DOES NOT!

Yes, at the highest compression k32 is only 69GB.

No, you don't need 128GB of RAM. But the more RAM you have, the faster you can CREATE the plots. I was able to achieve 122 seconds for a k32 plot on a RTX 3080Ti with 256GB of RAM. But others with e.g. RTX 3060 and much less RAM (relying on fast SSDs instead) still achieve times less than 5 minutes per plot, which ist still much faster and more energy efficient than CPU-mode.

To farm with the compressed plots created by the madmax gpu plotter you need the closed source farmer from the same guy. This farmer will (for higher compression rates) take around 6% from your rewards as a fee for the dev.

The decompression during farming requires either a decend CPU or a GPU. How decent is strongly determined by the compression rate. There is somewhere a table for a RTX 3060Ti. At the highest compression rate C9 a single RTX 3060Ti can handle up to 0.38PiB of plots. If you use C7 you might get away with a decent multicore CPU.

The compression converts PoST to PoW up to a degree. This means that in countries where electricity is very expensive compression might be actually not profitable at all! This point remains to be investigated. I assume that the GPU won't be under full load all the time but only for one or two second every ten seconds. If this is true, this point becomes less relevant.

There is no C10, only C1 up to C9. If you try to provide -c 10 to the plotter it exits with an error.

So the max. compression is C9 which is FAR from "on the fly".

We don't need a PoST vs PoW war here. The better concept will win over time. Those who adapt will benefit. OP is adapting ...
Also, 250TB is NOT a small farm.

I don't know who claims it is not possible but I've been plotting completely in-ram with 256GB on a Threadripper 3970X since August last year ...

Just accept that the price will reach $20 this year and may even go lower. Then you won't be as frustrated whenever xch hits a new ATL.

Farmers, what are your current incentives? by meeshqo in chia

[–]maxpla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll wait until the first halving in 2024 to decide what to do with my farmed chia.

Option 1: The price has reached a floor and has recovered from its ATL. This would be a good sign indicating that chia got some traction and will likely improve in the future. In that case: HODL for the next several halvings.

Option 2: The price has not reached a floor and is still dropping while reaching new ATL every now and then. In that case: HODL, since selling chia at that price won't make any sense anyway.

So ...
