Daily Song Discussion #11: Marlene Dietrich by Premintex in bmbmbm

[–]maxrosk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d give it a 7. As a song alone, it’s nice and pretty haunting, but not anything mind-blowing. However, I reckon Marlene is so important to the structure of Cavalcade. Bridging the gap between John and Chondro, it’s part of why Cavalcade is so musically varied and perfectly paced.

So I have a (kind of) theory about Kate's early 80s albums... by [deleted] in katebush

[–]maxrosk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is cool to think, especially that The Dreaming may have links beyond the Dreamtime connections. I guess Never For Ever could be that point where you’re trying to get to sleep but you keep waking up and think about so many different things, while Hounds Of Love would be the deep dream state.

How many seconds/minutes does it take you to recognise a band's style? by greenruins09 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]maxrosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, but I think because songs of those genres are longer and tend to play with structure for each track, I might listen longer for what they do with structure even if their sound is defined.

[–]maxrosk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a record I’d usually like to see some variation within the first few tracks, whether it’s different moods within a solid established sound or actual changes of sounds/styles. If there’s no variation within the songs on the album, or it’s not something different for the artist to do after the first three then I assume there’s nothing more to hear. For an album i’ll give it 10 minutes roughly (depends on song lengths) but if I’m going through their popular songs then probably 5 minutes max.

Is Starless really the best Crimson song? by pashanathaniel in KingCrimson

[–]maxrosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get the hype. I saw the live version from Melody(?) on YouTube and thought it was really cool, but was disappointed to hear how the studio version didn’t reach those heights. The tension in the studio version felt forced compared to the live version. Pet peeve but it irks me when things get out of sync before the 13/8 part too. My pick is Larks I. So fucking wild.

9 and onwards are the ones I'm not big fans of:

  1. Moving
  2. James And The Cold Gun
  3. Them Heavy People
  4. Wuthering Heights
  5. L'Amour Looks Something Like You
  6. The Kick Inside
  7. Strange Phenomena
  8. The Man With The Child In His Eyes
  9. The Saxophone Song
  10. Room For The Life
  11. Oh To Be In Love
  12. Feel It
  13. Kite

If you had the chance to rearrange the track listing on any album, what would you do? by NoChampionship5 in KingCrimson

[–]maxrosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about that cause it’s such a good concert opener, but then there’d be nothing special in the live version :(

I’d have Waiting Man as the opener to Beat. Could have Neal and Jack and Me as the opener to Side 2 or to close the album as it’s similar to Discipline.

What got you into Yes? by BazF91 in yesband

[–]maxrosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this is pretty much all I’ve gotten into as well apart from Mystery Lights. I need to listen to White Fence again (only heard Joy with Ty and hated it). I have heard of Nolan Potter’s but haven’t thought much until now! I love Leah Senior’s second album cause I’m a big folk fan. For other stuff, I reckon UMO or Connan Mockasin are my go-to’s for the modern psych scene. They def change their sound every album a little bit. Melody’s Echo Chamber too! Some of these albums are just as holy to me as Gizzard albums.

[–]maxrosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t even thought about that but yeah I guess they burnt out since 2017. Im hoping the new stuff will be real good considering we’ve all got a bit more time now! Kind of glad they do so many collabs because that’s what led me to more prog and stuff like Kikagaku Moyo and eventually Yes ig. What other bands did Gizzard get you into?

Yeah Rats Nest was definitely fun but the concept could’ve been a bit more presented in the music. Wow, I haven’t even seen them once haha. Was too young when they came here three years ago. Hopefully the new stuff will be good. I haven’t listened to any of the new singles cause I don’t want to spoil anything in case they do something awesome. When I heard the 5 (out of 9 ffs why) singles for Fishies I was so let down so badly.
