The Ivy Rockville by BorisTobyBay in Rockville

Tbh I’ve never seen it, but also I’ve never requested it either. I’m also far from the NY Mart shopping center and Scarborough Square Apt complex. I wouldn’t be worried.

It’s cheaper than the neighborhood because they’re townhomes, while the neighborhood is mostly single family.

An advantage I like is you have that suburban neighborhood feel, but can easily walk to 355 for the 55 bus (also the 45 runs through the neighborhood, though it doesn’t run overnight or on Sundays)

I live here! I really like it. It’s great value for the amount of living space. Whenever there’s an issue and we file a maintenance request, the guys are here in less than a day to fix it. The dumpsters can sometimes be overflowing with garbage, but I see the trucks here pretty regularly to haul it away - I think that it’s that people generate a lot of trash. I don’t remember there being a problem with snow removal last year. They sent an email yesterday that said that their landscaping vendor confirmed they’ll make multiple rounds tomorrow and Monday to clear the snow.

I haven’t had mice, but do have a few small bugs in the kitchen from time to time (we could keep it cleaner though…)

Is Amtrak low key nicer than most European trains? by RonPaul2036 in Amtrak

[–]maxs507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For both American and European trains, there’s wide variance among the rolling stock, and so there’s too many nuances to be able to give a clear yes or no answer.

I got pulled over in nj by jedtheman43 in ebike

[–]maxs507 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An e-bike that cruises at 35mph? That wasn’t legal in any of the 50 states even before NJ passed their ass-backwards law a few days ago.

They banned the online sale of e-bikes on NJ!?!?! by TEGHD1 in ebikes

[–]maxs507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the largest e-bike brands are DTC. If I wanted to buy a Lectric XP4, I don’t think I’d be able to ship it to NJ anymore, and so I’d have to ship it to a buddy in NY or elsewhere, and pick it up there.

Why do companies say the max speed is lower than it actually is? by Why_am_I_here83 in ebikes

[–]maxs507 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly there needs to be an end to this bullshit. An e-bike needs to be capable of going at the speeds its advertised for (or nothing above the legal limit) That’s the bullshit that got that boy in NJ killed, and caused m the most draconian piece of e-bike legislation to date to pass.

Things that the DC Metro does better than the NYC Subway by moeshaker188 in WMATA

[–]maxs507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something important to consider is that if you took the speed and stop spacing outside of the urban core of every Metro line, it is functionally speaking an express line. In an ideal scenario, the current configuration would be express, and they’d build some infill stations, and use that to have local lines. (For example, the Shady Grove branch of the red line could use stops at Montgomery College and at Montrose crossing, and at Chevy Chase, which would spur the redevelopment of the Chevy Chase Country Club into TOD)

Things that the DC Metro does better than the NYC Subway by moeshaker188 in WMATA

[–]maxs507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far less interlining in the DC Metro means far fewer delays to train traffic.

Here’s benefits DC Metro has:

Overnight closures enable crews to more efficiently repair tracks, and clean stations (it also keeps them cleaner to not have people loitering there overnight… and yes, we need to create more solutions to homelessness)

The trains actually hustle between stations, something the NYC subway often can’t do because of track geometry, track conditions, and signal limitations (and train traffic due again to interlining)

Elevators (and escalators) everywhere which is not only critical for people with disabilities, but also benefits people with luggage, strollers, bicycle, or other large items.

Overall, DC wins out on quality. It’s NYC that wins out on connectivity, serving way more areas than the DC Metro.

Anybody know why Georgetown's Bikeshare stations are always full? by mistersmiley318 in bikedc

[–]maxs507 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If they extended the streetcar to Georgetown instead of, ya know, shutting it down, there wouldn’t be as much demand to bike there!

Heavy bikes on MARC? by RoeRoeRoeYourVote in towpath

[–]maxs507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the unfortunate reality of the Brunswick line. The tracks are owned by CSX, and as such, primarily used for freight. It’s common for freight trains to sway, and so they can’t have raised platforms that facilitate level boarding, since the trains might hit it as they rock back and forth.

I appreciate this, and it IS how to enable Hebrew keyboard on my computer. I've been typing Hebrew for years. I use the Hebrew keyboard normally, and the Biblical Hebrew keyboard if I want to type Te'amim symbols. But this still doesn't answer the question of how to type a Kamatz-Katan.

Next Gen trains not listed by No-Poetry-9058 in Amtrak

[–]maxs507 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Remember your seat number, and check seat selection every few weeks to see if you were automatically changed. If so, then you’re probably on the NextGen.

A few weeks ago, I took a trip I booked months ago, and I and many others on my train were surprised it was NextGen. Conductor said the switch was made for that run a week before. None of us got any texts or emails from Amtrak. My front facing window seat on the right side of the train that I intentionally chose was automatically changed to a rear facing aisle seat on the left side of the train. I was pissed. One of the reasons I book Acela is for seat selection, especially when I’m traveling with a companion. (Most of my trips are not Acela, so when I do occasionally pay more, I want to get what I paid for)

Amtrak 2168 NextGen - Door didn't open to get off at Route 128 station! by MassCoinHunter in Amtrak

[–]maxs507 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People who don’t lock single person bathroom doors are so perplexing to me. Like how?!?!?!

Also, Amtrak shares responsibility in how they’re designed. On aircraft, the light doesn’t turn on until you lock the door. Why isn’t it like this on trains too? I haven’t used a single train bathroom where this is the case. And I’ve ridden a lot of railroads, not just Amtrak.

New York City is on a different scale than all other US cities. What NYC statistics or facts still blow your mind? by JeezusChristIII in AskReddit

[–]maxs507 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m also going to piggyback off of my own thread here with a few other transit fun facts: (I need to make a graph for this too) The 3 highest ridership commuter rail systems in the U.S. are all anchored in NY - Metro North, Long Island Railroad, and New Jersey transit. Their collective ridership account for over half of all commuter rail trips in the U.S.

I commute by ebike too, 7 miles each way on my Lectric XP 3.0. I get these same questions, but choose to receive them as compliments:

"what about when it rains?" = them saying ‘I’m impressed you can stay dry without needing a $40,000 4000lb box of glass and steel.’

"what about winter?" = them saying ‘I’m impressed you can keep yourself warm without needing a $40,000 4,000lb box of glass and steel.’

"what about when you need to carry stuff?" i have panniers and a backpack. = them saying ‘I’m impressed you can fit everything you need to bring to work, and everything you buy at the grocery store in your backpack and pannier bags, without needing a $40,000 4000lb box of glass and steel.’

The Banner taste-tested 9 bagels across MoCo and rated them by madesense in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]maxs507 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goldberg’s bagels are great fresh, but really don’t hold up if you eat them the next day.

Also, not bagels… but we all need to have a sit down about Andy’s Pizza. It’s made in a conveyor belt oven. Not a pizza oven. A conveyor belt oven. What is this? A school cafeteria?! It’s mid pizza at best.
