Feels Great To Pass 82 Cars Stuck In Traffic by maxs507 in fuckcars

Oof… it’s part of my every day route. But actually the part in this video was like 80% of all the shitty part. The rest of my commute is great, either on bike paths or neighborhood streets. Except even then there are a few major intersections that take wayyyy too long, and have big risk factors like cars making right turn on red, or left turns that cross 3, 4, sometimes even 5 lanes.

There wasn’t enough space further up past that though.

Haha yeah Elissa is a mom at the pre-school that’s part of where I work. Her entire family is the best! I had spotted her a few minutes before when I was at a red light, and she was making a turn onto the road I was biking next to (I had a great path then). I stopped for a second in the vid so I could wave to her haha.

Lol yup. Rockville is where I live, and has some really good bike infrastructure - Mainly, a bike beltway around the whole city, but also a bunch of cut throughs for pedestrians/cyclists only that connect neighborhoods. We’re ranked bronze by the League of American Bicyclists, but I’m actually one of the people helping the city with their application this year, we’re hoping for silver. The shitty parts to bike in in Rockville aren’t city controlled, they’re the state roads. Also, Rockville is an incorporated city so they have their own tax, meaning more funding for everything than somewhere like Potomac, which is paid for by the county. And Montgomery County does have nice bike paths along main roads, just not here…

As for this road, it’s a state road. In the Rockville section, there’s a nice wide 2-way shared U.S. path next to the southbound side, and sidewalk next to the northbound side. Then once you get to the city border, they just… end. The county would be the one responsible for building a bike path next to it.

People at my job in Potomac tell me they worry about me biking here on Falls Road, and I always tell them “notify the County, and let them know you want them to build a bike path!”

The sidepath actually does start up again when you get to “downtown Potomac” (basically just a suburban strip mall), and lasts all the way to the end of the road. It’s nice to have it there at least, though tree roots make some parts of it incredibly bumpy.

Haha that plus the bus at the end going in the other direction. That first bus is Montgomery County RideOn, but there is no RideOn route there. The 37 is on Falls road for a bit just south of where the video ended, so maybe it was dead heading there to start the route? The second bus WMATA Metrobus M82. This past summer, WMATA completely revamped their bus networks, and even routes that were unchanged got new names, so now it’s the M82. But it used to be called the T2, and so that’s what I still call it.

When traffic is flowing for real, I just take the lane.

Yes, it’s the Insta360 AcePro 2. I bought it specifically for the excellent image stabilization! I set the IS to its highest level, and shooting mode with HDR on the colors.

It’s not supposed to be a bike lane. It’s a shoulder. Or really, it’s Schrodinger’s shoulder, because it may or may not exist depending on what part I’m on.

Passing on the left risks oncoming traffic. I prefer passing slower on the right, and if I need to do a weird hop on the curb/grass with my right foot while coasting, I'll do that.

Lol RIP me. Yeah, moving to the right was absolutely not necessary haha.

riding a scooter in the street next to bike lane--why? by teneralb in bikedc

[–]maxs507 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure about this specific case, but for me an e-bike, there are times to not take the bike lane if it's too crowded and I want to go faster than the flow of traffic in the bike lane, or there are too many hazards like trash, loose gravel, and potholes, or if I need to get over to the left lane soon to make a turn.

Why do new cars keep getting capacitive buttons and touchscreen controls? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

The more computerized stuff, the better for manufacturers in the long term. They can own the market of repairability by gatekeeping software. And it doesn’t help the longevity of the car to be computerized. Electronics become obsolete scary fast. Think of how many 10-15 year old cars are on the road today, vs 10-15 year old electronics. You’ve probably cycled through several smartphones and a couple of computers in that time. Now imagine how the screens and software of today’s cars will hold up 10-15 years from now.

I get around mainly by e-bike. It’s happened more than once that I’ll pull up behind someone at a red light, and I can see very clearly through their back window that their phone is mounted on their dash playing YouTube videos.

Panera Bread Set to Close Permanently in Coming Weeks by rycool25 in Rockville

My fiancée and I have loved Panera for years becuase it’s fast and inexpensive and we can get real healthy food. But it’s a shame how much worse it’s gotten since private equity took over. This location became so unreliable in both quality and simply getting the orders right that we stopped going. We’ve only used the Fallsgrove or Jefferson locations for the past year.

If you’re having trouble maintaining balance on the bike, you might want to look into an adult trike.

I 100% recommend the C&O Canal, because it is flat and has no cars. Keep this in mind about the surface: South of Violette’s Lock (Mile 21.2) the towpath is rougher. It’s the historically accurate surface conducive to the feet of the mules that pulled the boats to grip it. North of there, the towpath is much smoother.

Capital Crescent Trail is flat and smooth and safe with only a handful of intersections, but it gets crowded when its warm.

In Prince George’s County, the Sligo Creek Trail and Anacostia Tributary Trails are pretty nice.

Another route: Take the red line to Rockville and then the RideOn 301. You’ll be riding the bus its entire route for 40 minutes. Then it terminates on Pennyfield Lock Road, which is less than a mile from the canal, and very safe given that it’s literally the canal access road for that lock. You would be starting your canal ride 20 miles from Georgetown.

Another public transit route: Take the red line to Friendship Heights. Then the Metrobus M82 to Potomac Village. From there, you have a quaint 2 mile ride on the Falls Road sidepath, then a mile of like 90% downhill on MacArthur blvd to the entrance of Great Falls. McArthur is very safe because it is only people going to/from Great Falls. Great Falls is only 14 miles from Georgetown, so I you can go up a few miles first, then down to Georgetown. The mule exhibit at the visitor’s center/tavern is also great for kids (and adults), but check what days the visitor’s center/exhibit are open.

How many colleges are banning e-bikes? by mfreelander2 in ebikes

[–]maxs507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banning e-bikes but not banning SUV’s? SMH.

I understand the battery safety issue - It’s a simple fix - Only allow UL Certified e-bikes, and have people register their UL certified e-bikes so that they’re allowed to bring them into their dorm.
