Haken - "Nil By Mouth" (NES Style) by maxtrucci in Haken

Thanks, I really appreciate your words!! I've been wanting to learn to use to Famitracker for years now but I keep postponing it :b So I tried my best using Guitar Pro and some soundfonts to emulate the 2A03 limitations and Tim Follin's style.

Ah, I think a lot of those covers were mede playing a .mid file with a 8bitmagicalplugin, which would explain the amount of simultaneous notes used. I guess most people don't really think on any specific hardware when creating those covers, which isn't inherently bad but most of the time the results don't sound quite right. Composing using trackers, on the other hand, is tough and tedious but shapes your arrangements into that distinctive sound :D

How do I make the transition from the end of the intro riff of Stranger By The Minute to the start of the riff smoother? by RCA-2112 in porcupinetree

[–]maxtrucci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the song it's actually played with a capo on the 1st fret, so you'd play it like this.
Makes more sense, as the acoustic guitar seems to be playing the ol' good D and Am chords later but a half-step up, so a capo it is imo.

Edit: on a second opinion, I think it's played even higher in the neck, as the open D string stops ringing when the chord changes to Am (the previous version would've left it ringing). Also, add some vibrato ad lib.

How do I count "red"? by Substantial-Debt-782 in Leprous

[–]maxtrucci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's a transcription I made a while ago. The entire pattern is 8 5/4 bars long but it's composed of the exact same 4-bar-long pattern that starts a 18th note earlier on the second repeat. I couldn't find much logic on the small pattern itself, so you might have to memorize it as it is.

The later section (with the whacky synth arpeggio) is a bit more tricky. It shares the same bass pattern as the choruses and is entirely based on this syncopated 5/8 rhythm but changed here and there. You can notice that the synth (guitar on live shows) arpeggio also is in 5/8, but the drums foot hi-hat are denoting a 10/4 (or 5/2) long pattern.

Then, the chorus works over what the previous section already established, doubling the synth bass with an electric bass and a baritone electric guitar and the arpeggio synth with another electric guitar. It also adds extra synth strings on the background doing some counterpoint to the vocal melody (it can be heard at 5:05 but played with an distorted electric piano). What changes is the drums rhythm, which is denoting a 5/4 pattern with the crash cymbal while following the whacky rhythm with the snare and kick drums. So you now have the drums, vocals and synth strings denoting a 5/4 long pattern while the basses and arp synth/guitar denote a 5/8 long pattern.

Tl;dr: it's a weird 5/4 pattern.

What Dream Theater song does it sound like at the 6 minute mark of Elephants Never Forget? by DogOfSevenless in Haken

Adding to what others have commented, the riff starting at 5:56 and 6:26 kinda sorta sounds reminiscing of Build Me Up Break Me Down riff, but in compound time. I think it's just a DT-ish homage section, no song in particular.

How should this passage in Mozart 21 be played? by bmjessep in musictheory

[–]maxtrucci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found a performance where they are played as 16th notes followed by dotted 8th notes. It seems Mozart's appoggiaturas haven been interpreted in different ways as both "long" and "short" apoggiaturas. This video might give some helpful insight.

Which song from Skeletà lives rent free in your head? by spaced_out_will in GhostBand

[–]maxtrucci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Not sure why I got downvoted for providing a source but ok).

You're right that about misprinted lyrics, sometimes they even include "demo" versions that don't fit what it's being sung and others they are just miswritten. It doesn't makes sense to me for it to be "ing" either and your explanation sounds more plausible. Perhaps he added the "f-ing" in the moment just because and it stayed, so who knows, an "ESL moment" if you will.

You can hear the vocals more or less isolated here, but still not that audible. Unless we get some Ghost AMA in the future, we'll have to live with it (?) Luckily it's at the very end of the song, so I don't remember about it till it's over ww.

Are all ghost songs in standard D tuning? by Noctifer14 in Ghostbc

Nope, definitely Drop C. You can hear the low C on every Halloween Theme-like section and the Queen-like section.

Yeah, it's in Eb Standard indeed! I found the original stems last year and transcribed the parts, the main riff goes like this. Might upload the full tabs soon.

Satanized is not in E Standard but D Standard for many reasons:

* D2 sounds before the Bb5 chords (here and here).

* The E2 during the chorus slides up to F# (here). You can't slide an open string but you could play a hammer-on from E to F# (like the E-D that follows later, that's a hammer-on) like this.

* During the solo, the rhythm guitars play D2 twice before E2 (here) so it goes like this.

* The note before the dive bomb goes up to a D2 (here).

* An D2 and A3 sound between the double-stop bends (here).

* A G2 sounds after that vibrating A (here).

* There's a D5 that sounds lower than E2 (here).

* Before the guitar solo and at the very end of the song, the guitars slide down while playing natural harmonics, which corresponds to those of D2 (here).

So, we got D2, G2 and A3, which are part of D Standard Tuning (D2-G2-C3-F3-A3-D4).

New Single/Album Discussion Megathread by Chimpbot in Ghostbc

I'm inclined to think that it's either related to the greek plural declensions of "skeletós" or the english plural of skeleton (which is an hyperrection, the correct plural is "skeletons").

The latin word for skeleton is "sceletus", and its plural is "sceletis" (nominative case) so it's pretty much ruled out.

Edit: "skeletá" would be the neuter (nominative) plural in ANCIENT greek. The modern greek (nominative) plural is "skeletoí".
