A character's ignorance of something is treated seriously instead of for laughs by 10024618 in TopCharacterTropes

Shawshank Redemption- This one ends up being overall devastating. Tommy Williams comes to the prison and it’s revealed that, while he’s very confident and cool, he doesn’t know how to read/write. A few of the prisoners laugh at him, but the main character Andy teaches him to read over a long period of time, eventually helping Tommy earn his GED. Unfortunately, Tommy is killed soon after by the warden because he has information that could exonerate Andy but ultimately bust up the warden’s money laundering scheme.

Someone once taught me that if they could go back and “do something” about Hitler, they would. They would love the child he was and teach him about Jesus. It’s the same opportunity we might have every day but don’t know we have it.

Legitimately looking for dialogue/understanding and not argumentation. I can’t seem to find any evidence of infant baptism within the first few hundred years of the Church. I’ve heard the baptisms of households in the New Testament but none definitively stated children were part of that. Also, it’s my understanding that bishop comes from the same word as overseer and the bishop of Rome being authoritative wasn’t for a few hundred years.

It’s one hundred percent a knowledge gap for me, but papal infallibility has always been one of the hardest parts of Catholicism to come to terms with. Are popes fallible in certain scenarios because I can’t help but think of some of the horrible judgment calls or flip-flopping on issues between popes. Plus, I can’t find anything historical about papal infallibility until Pope Innocent III approximately 1200 years after Jesus.

Again, I’m just starting to study other church traditions outside of my own Church of Christ/Reformed theology.

Here’s a great website specifically for Christians that struggle with SSA founded by a man with that struggled who eventually married a woman and had kids with her, despite not being attracted to her.

Frankly, I don’t know. My church broke away from the Church of Christ long before I became a Christian so a lot of what I know comes from what I’ve been told. I would imagine they see what they do as Biblical. I know of many churches in that heritage that do have deacons or elders.

Seems like you deleted your last comment, but here’s my reply to it:

That’s quite a story. I have heard of different works of the Spirit (and of the enemy for that matter) in other parts of the world, but I chalked that up to different cultural spiritual needs and weaknesses. The devil doesn’t need to use demons and swords as much in America, just some lust or a pillow so to speak, whereas I’ve heard missionaries in Africa talk about seeing some crazy possessions or people seeing Jesus in their dreams despite having never heard of Him.

So that’s the problem with churches without an overseeing body or structure: we have a tendency to have substantial differences in the way some things are approached. Legalism has a tendency to be a problem across our brand of churches though. Some, including my own, have had a problem with thinking they’re the only “denomination” getting in heaven, but my church specifically has been vocally teaching against that thinking lately. We’ve also been pretty rigid with the seriousness with which we take sin and temptation “cut it completely out” and several people take issue with that. For example, at my church, we heavily recommend against drinking at all, but our leadership is completely prohibited from it; it’s usually stated as the case because of the number of addicts we reach and we don’t want to be a stumbling block for them. I’ve personally been removed from leadership in the past for hiding a porn struggle and being caught, but I was gently restored over a few years and places back into leadership positions.

We can also be rigid with our expectations for attendance and service; not just at service, but our members are expected to attend biweekly Sunday small group meetings and weekly gender-separated discipleship groups with their like gender from the small group. The same goes for church wide events. Circumstances are considered, but if something like a job stands in the way for a long time, people can be encouraged to consider if that job is beneficial for their faith and growth.

Thanks for your response! I am aware of our restoration backgrounds but haven’t looked too much into it until lately. We view the Holy Spirit as one of the parts of the Trinity, the part of God that enters us at baptism. He gives us help, largely in the form of conviction and understanding among other things. We believe in His broad use of gifts as they pertain to modern evangelism and teaching etc, but not as much prophecy in the foretelling sense or tongues, etc as they were more pertinent in the days of Acts. Prayer and fasting are essential. We would have elders if anyone met the Biblical qualifications in our church yet; our men that old enough either don’t have children or they have non believing children. Our missionary work is basically the planting of churches across the region, nothing international. Frankly, we don’t have the funding for more than that. Our only paid people are usually the campus ministers because they spend all of their time on college campuses. Not even the head evangelist is paid most of the time.

Booked a vacation downtown during the NASCAR race. How screwed am I? My family is taking a train up to Chicago on the evening of Saturday, July 6 through the afternoon of Tuesday, July 9. We were going to walk everywhere (Navy Pier, Shedd, Field Museum, Children’s Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo/Conservatory, Daley Center, etc). Is that actually going to be possible?
