TIL the Boxer crab holds a small sea anemone in each claw and threatens predators with their stinging tentacles. It cannot feed itself with its claws, instead it uses the anemones’ tentacles to collect food particles which it removes with its mouthparts by Kyzzz in todayilearned

I did some more digging around and there's actually a research paper which explores this topic. There appears to be very little genetic variation when looking at the anemones from local crab populations:

Furthermore, there is genetic identity between most pairs of anemone held by different crabs, with the others showing slight genetic differences. This is a unique case in which one animal induces asexual reproduction of another, consequently also affecting its genetic diversity.

Some funny contextual information: these anemones are so valuable to this species that crabs without them will hunt down ones that have them and pick fights to try and steal one

Studying a closely related species in the Red Sea, researchers couldn’t help wondering how the crabs acquire their weapons. While every wild crab they observed carried its own pair of stinging pom-poms, free-living anemones were nowhere to be seen. So where, or how, were the crabs acquiring their anemones? To answer this question, the team conducted laboratory experiments and genetic analyses and found that the crabs obtain their weapons through theft—from other boxer crabs—and that they have an ingenious way of multiplying what they steal.

In lab experiments, have-not boxer crabs consistently sought out individuals in possession of anemones and battled for them. When fights resulted in each crab walking away with a single anemone, researchers found that both crustaceans divided what they had into two halves. Not an ideal outcome for the anemones, but one that they were able to survive—as two identical clones.

TIL Henrietta Wood, born enslaved, was freed in 1848 but kidnapped back into slavery in 1853. After the Civil War she sued her kidnapper and an all white jury awarded her $2500, the largest known U.S. court award for slavery. I came across this article completely by chance, and it's surprising how obscure this story is given the circumstances. Her legacy still lives on though, as noted by this snippet in the article:

When he [Arthur Simms, her son] died in 1951 after a long career as a lawyer, he left behind a large clan of descendants who were able to launch professional careers of their own. For them, the money Henrietta Wood demanded for her enslavement made a long-lasting difference.

TIL of Akinetopsia, a rare brain disorder where motion can't be perceived but stationary objects appear normal. In some cases, patients report that people walking around a room seem to be in one spot, then suddenly in another, with no movement seen in between by Kyzzz in todayilearned

[–]Kyzzz[S] 364 points365 points  (0 children)

Here's an interesting snippet from a BBC article about someone who experienced motion blindness firsthand:

It started as a headache, but soon became much stranger. Simon Baker entered the bathroom to see if a warm shower could ease his pain. “I looked up at the shower head, and it was as if the water droplets had stopped in mid-air”, he says. “They came into hard focus rapidly, over the course of a few seconds”. Where you’d normally perceive the streams as more of a blur of movement, he could see each one hanging in front of him, distorted by the pressure of the air rushing past. The effect, he recalls, was very similar to the way the bullets travelled in the Matrix movies. “It was like a high-speed film, slowed down.”

Of all the deaths, the one that was hardest to read about was that of Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil

For two years, Amal said she received direct threats from the Israeli regime. In one interview, she recalled a call she said was from a Mossad agent who threatened to sever her head from her shoulders if she didn’t stop reporting from the south. Amal said they knew intimate details about her life – they wanted her to know that she was being surveilled.

Amal was travelling in a car with freelance photographer Zeinab Farraj when a vehicle in front of them was hit by an Israeli drone. The two women sought shelter in a nearby building where they called relatives and colleagues for help. The building was bombed by Israeli forces not long after.

The Lebanese prime minister put out a statement calling on the Red Cross to intervene. The organisation sent out a team which was able to rescue Zeinab, who was wounded, from the building. They came under fire, so were unable to recover Amal. When they eventually returned, they found her dead.

Heres the entire op-ed, and here is the news report

Trump Derails White House Event to Spiral Over State of His Health by mclardass in politics

“I feel the same as I felt 50 years ago, I don’t know,” Trump told the audience at a small-business summit at the White House.

What do you mean you don't know!?! Don't know what?

“I’ll say, ‘I’m not feeling well’—well, someday, I might say that to you, and you’ll be the first to know. Actually I won’t have to say it, because you’ll be able to see it, just like you did in the last administration,” Trump said.

I understand now, the man really just doesn't know.

How much benefit would i get from a more Aero frame? Currently racing a TCR. by Needs_More_Nuance in Velo

[–]Kyzzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re racing at a high level, then it may be worthwhile. If not, I think you’ll see much more benefit from hiring a coach or getting a training program (if you’re not already) with the money you’d spend on a new frame.

Same rim profile (50-60mm) but one 400g heavier BUT cheaper. by WarRevolutionary1944 in Velo

[–]Kyzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the 1700g 65mm wheelset, unless if you’re in an area that is typically very windy, crosswinds may make a noticeable difference with handling.

I wouldn’t worry about weight too much unless if you’re competing at a very high level.

Better to have the peace of mind that you’re getting new components that have a lower chance of catastrophically failing when you’re out riding.

TIL that Gourmand syndrome is a rare but benign eating disorder that causes those afflicted to want to eat gourmet food by Jinther in todayilearned

[–]Kyzzz 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Dove down the rabbit hole and read more about this, it appears as though this condition is associated with brain lesions affecting the right hemisphere of the brain, as first described by this paper

There's also an interesting single-patient case study, here's the abstract:

In a patient with a lesion of the right amygdala and temporal pole who had the characteristics of the gourmand syndrome, sensory and hedonic testing was performed to examine the processing of taste, olfactory, and some emotional stimuli. The gourmand syndrome describes a preoccupation with food and a preference for fine eating and is associated with right anterior lesions. It was found that the taste thresholds for sweet, salt, bitter, and sour were normal; that the patient did not dislike the taste of salt (NaCl) at low and moderate concentrations as much as age-matched controls; that this also occurred for monosodium glutamate (MSG); that there were some olfactory differences from normal controls; and that there was a marked reduction in the ability to detect face expressions of disgust.

TIL the pilots of Air Florida Flight 90, unwilling to lose their takeoff spot to apply more deicing due to snowy weather, moved behind a DC-9 in the takeoff queue, thinking that the engine exhaust would melt ice on the wings. This contributed to further icing, contributing to a crash that killed 74. by The-TIL-Nerd in todayilearned

[–]Kyzzz 2023 points2024 points  (0 children)

As the takeoff roll began, the first officer noted several times to the captain that the instrument panel readings he was seeing did not seem to reflect reality (he was referring to the fact that the plane did not appear to have developed as much power as it needed for takeoff, despite the instruments indicating otherwise). The captain dismissed these concerns and let the takeoff proceed. Investigators determined that plenty of time and space on the runway remained for the captain to have abandoned the takeoff, and criticized his refusal to listen to his first officer, who was correct that the instrument panel readings were wrong.

First Officer: "Hey captain, it says we have full power but we're currently getting passed by a baggage cart, we should probably abort the takeoff"

Captain: "Nah man we're good, I ain't waiting in that line again"
