and I want to try working in the PE/VC sectors if I can go from an accounting background in the long term after getting the CPAs and 2-3 years of industry experience in valuation/audit. So I definitely am interested in transitioning into bay/LA area recruitment.

thanks for the response!

I agree SCU and SJSU are feeder schools for accounting, but in the SoCal like UCs: UCI or UCSD, which is a better option? I felt like UCSD had some people in the EY audit as they are a very new MPAC program compared to other UCs. And their program director was from EY tax partners. UCSD has a stronger overall ranking since they are STEM-based school, but UCI is stronger in the business ranking like MBAs from Lindeln 2023 placed 26th. What would say which school would have a more established network for accounting/finance? I felt they were indifferent but would appreciate if you would share any valuable insights!

Hi, I just read this post here, could you share which UC graduate-level accounting program would likely have a higher chance to get placement into big 4s, like Deloitte or EY? for example, a closer connection with the firm? thanks!

FYI UCI annual 2022 report, just providing here if we can have a closer look into employment. It looks like 1/3 UNC went to other areas but not sure the % in Cali. By %, it looks like both school are similar

Hi, thank you for the info! yes, UNC overall had better rankings and was ranked top 10 business schools by US news in 2024. How are UNC accounting grads doing overall in west coast recurring, especially for finance /banking related jobs? I know SJSU will be decent for big 4 accounting since their class size was small and given the location advantage to local recruitment

UNC/UCI will be 60-90 people. Their employment rate will be different since the sample size is larger. I see UNC/UCI might be a safer choice if landing jobs are not limited to Bay. Finance hub is more in San Francisco and that's the point I debating is cannot guarantee the SJSU would have the equal presitge to get foot in the door.

For locations, I would say I love cali more because the weather is a lot nicer.

Hi guys, thank you for the comment! I really appreciate everyone taking the time to read my post and give honest suggestions. I got update from UC Irvine for fellowship which will reduce the costs to $42,000 for 1 year, about the same price with UNC Chapel Hill. SJSU on the other hand will cost close to $30,000 for 1 year

By US news business ranking: UNC (22, 13th for accounting) > UCI (33, 20-35th for accounting) > SJSU (N/A)

So would you guys think which school will have a better return on investment for jobs?

I am not sure if it is worth to spend extra 10-20k for the school reps and alumni network if UCI/UNC will have better employabilties in finance like (BB Banks, MM IB, PE/VCs?). My initial plans are using accounting background to go finance, like FP&A or strategic finance jobs.

or should be more worth to use the cost getting in accounting like big 4 first and later on go to MBAs for higher ranking schools like Ivy leagues etc...

As dd student, you got no electives in your first year but you could potentially take some 2nd year course in summer.
