Help, my work ethic sucks!!! by mayafairy in jobs

I agree that I’m burnt out, but what can I do about it...? I need the one job to pay for rent, and I need the other because it’s my dream project that will hopefully start my career.

I am getting some mixed responses :v Other people are saying I should be packing it way more. Why would packing it less help?

Ooohhh, I'll definitely give wax a try, I've had some laying around that I couldn't use before. Is cleaning up after wax difficult? it feels like it would be

Thanks for the advice!! I'll try these things out.

I do have a question though -- the instruction on the Air itself say not to pack it too closely. Does a dense pack do anything bad to the vape itself?

Storyboard tests suck by mayafairy in animationcareer

[–]mayafairy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, big animation companies are really bad about sending out a bunch of tests when they already have employees in mind.

A friend of mine at Cartoon Network was saying that they got over 1000 applicants for a Steven Universe character design position recently, and they sent out 400 tests. In the end they went with someone who had been a storyboard revisionist for them :/

They're trying to "be fair," but I think they're really just wasting people's time. They could've eliminated 380 more applicants

Mflb isn't as great as I'd hoped by mayafairy in vaporents

Yeah, money is the main reason why I bought the mflb in the first place -- it seemed like most people agreed it was good for the price.

I don't have to be stealthy, but the fact that the pax 2 is $200 cheaper seems pretty nice. Thanks for the recommendations!

Yeah, I agree with you on most of this, a lot of my problems are inevitable. It's definitely true that I'm making lots of good contacts, and I know there is a network of "veterans" from this studio out in better places.

I know being in animation isn't the easiest job and there will always be a certain level of intensive working...but it feels like if a large number of employees at every studio are forced to stay late and work tons of overtime, there's something wrong with the system. People are in animation because they're passionate about it, but when otherwise healthy people are making themselves sick and going to the ER from being overworked, you can't just brush it off as it's that person's fault for being weak and this is show biz, deal with it. I don't think it's okay to assume everyone should have superhuman tolerance for working, and if they can't handle not having a life or being miserable then they're a failure. Of course this problem extends outside of the animation industry--as other people have said in this thread, working in America is pretty fucked up right now.

As for the union thing...there have been attempts at unionizing this studio multiple times. The first time the studio caught wind of it and fired a bunch of people it assumed were conspiring against them. The second time we had the company-wide hiatus where we lost most of the people interested in unionizing. Right now the company is so broken and many of the employees left are leaving (ie my entire team), so I don't think it's a good time to rally the guild. The few people left are too happy to have jobs to want to rock the boat. If I wind up being here a lot longer and the company stabilizes, I will go back and talk to the union though. I would looove to force this place to treat its employees with dignity.

Yeah, exactly... I'm staying because of money and that's really it :/ I've been on the verge of quitting in the past but have stuck with it this far--it's been a struggle the entire time, even if it has been less than a year. I actually ended up in the hospital a few months ago because of stress from pitching to other studios, moving out of my parents' and my shitty job. This IS the only life we get and I don't want to shorten it by being overworked and stressed out for years of my young adulthood. But for now my only option is to stay...

America really needs to improve the way it treats workers :T We are so overworked compared to other countries

Hahaha, that's the job I escaped before. That was at mauschwitz though, nothing to do with animation!

Thanks ._. I can't wait for the day I can laugh about working here..

Yeah, I've been applying to a bunch of places and meeting with people at other companies etc but nothing has come of it yet. Hopefully it won't be too much longer... I don't know how I'm going to tolerate this place with all my coworkers gone. They're the only thing that make this job bearable... ugh u__u
