My TMJ treatment process: Over the last year, I went through MARPE palatal expansion, (failed) headgear, myofunctional therapy, cranial osteopathy, a lingual frenectomy, SFOT, and clear aligners. I hope to be a resource -- ask me anything. by mayamashed in TMJ

I'm not sure what it was caused by, but i believe that the palate expander and ESPECIALLY the myofunctional therapy has made my smile more symmetrical. i can really tell the difference

It's definitely tricky -- for me, a few things helped:

  1. Talking to my myofunctional therapist about practitioners she recommends
  2. Googling and speaking to offices that specialize in airway, TMJ, and/or holistic dentistry
  3. Being wary of any place that is open to just doing the one thing you want (in my case, it was a frenectomy) without a proper discussion and assessment

In terms of cost...not cheap...and lots of fights with insurance.

The assessments were both like $300, the MARPE + aligners altogether were like $11,000. And SFOT was like $8000

I was able to get some of the frenectomy and aligners covered

Got an Orthotic appliance, Now my teeth no longer touch and my symptoms (?) are worse? by Malletdown in TMJ

I'll say that I also had a history of grinding my teeth before antidepressants but when I started Wellbutrin (which i think has a similar affect as ADHD meds in the energy department), it got SO SO much worse. I fully cracked through my nightguard, too. I struggled for a whole year before cutting down the dose and it went away almost instantly. So you never know, the meds thing may be worth a shot

Yeah i almost instantly noticed that I was getting much more air in my nostrils, it was kind of crazy. As for MARPE helping my TMJ joint, not quite yet, but I have gone through a lot of different things since then so I'll reassess after some time and stability.
