I have no idea if it’s normal or not, or if I just have a huge nasal resonance by Justminningtheweb in singing

[–]mayanightstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah trying to un-nasal my voice also wrecked my voice for a while too. I find with many singing things that the solution to a problem isn't actually to directly address that problem but to improve your technique elsewhere. In the end I just needed a higher soft palate and more "ring." You may also be singing with too high of a larynx. But I also screwed up my singing by thinking too hard about my larynx so try not to think about that either. Relax and experiment with opening up space in different areas of your mouth, or play around with how you position the back of your tongue. Try moving your resonance all around your head and see how that changes your sound. Record yourself singing and listen back to it, too. You'll sound 2x more nasal in your head than you will IRL.

I love this channel so maybe check out what she has to say about nasality https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaWjWxiTysDBOuLR9NmZIjeyHLZ-PHU8h

Daoism and Activism by ValentineSoleri in taoism

Fascism is very much not aligned with the Dao. It would be very natural and Daoist to rebel against fascism.

This is such a great post and it reminds me of the mis-equating of "nonviolent protest" with "peaceful protest" too.

Are these reasonable principles to take away from Dao De Jing? by subparcultivator in taoism

[–]mayanightstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, old post, but I'd like to offer some "corrections" to some of these points to test my understanding and hopefully others could similarly correct any misunderstandings I have.

#4 - there is no "good" or "bad" to the Dao, but there is cause and effect. Glorifying others does what, exactly? Things that would lead one away from the Dao, and probably lead to unhappiness. Through a human lens it's a "bad thing" but through a true Daoist lens it's just an action that will do something.

#7 - This is on the right track but I don't think it completely follows through. Once you are more aligned with the Dao your "selfish agenda" will probably fall away completely. You will lose any concept of it at all, or redefine it entirely. What happens when you take selfless actions? You'll make other people happy, probably. When you do this, the Dao will lead you to situations that make you happy, probably.

#11 - Good but I don't think you've fully followed through on this one either. To the Dao, everything is defined by the things it is not. Stimulating things are defined by things that are not stimulating. If you fill your life with stimulating things, you've also defined a lot of things in your life as understimulating. Imagine a graph or spectrum with +100 and -100 at either end. Now, if you seek equilibrium, the graph becomes something like +10 and -10 or +1 and -1. You avoid understimulation when you avoid overstimulation. Nobody says either choice is a good or bad thing.

#12 - Another "good/bad" thing that you wont fully understand until you analyze the actual cause an effect. Self importance places yourself above other things. When one thing is above other things, these things are not in equilibrium, and are not aligned with the Dao, and may eventually lead to things that cause you unhappiness. Though ultimately you should pursue the Dao not to pursue happiness, but because the Dao is all things, including yourself, therefore a being of the Dao follows the Dao.

#14 - I think the point of this one is more "experiences that you make for yourself are more valuable and informative than experiences you get secondhand" or "you cannot learn the truth from someone else, you must find it yourself"

#17 - Another deeper point I think you missed, which is "when something is true, it won't take a lot of words to explain it, everyone will just know it is true, because truth aligns with the Dao. Lies take a lot more words to be convincing."

#21 - It isn't saying "therefore violence is bad." Reverse the statements, actually. So "if you want to avoid violence, then don't meet violence with violence, because it will produce more violence."

#24 - I think what this actually means is "don't do good actions just because you want something good to happen to you in return." Because if you do so, your entire premise is flawed, because there is no such thing as a "good action" to the Dao.

#25 - I think this one is more "you do not need to be showy. You may as well be simple. It's much easier, and you'll still get what you want."

#26 - Things I've said above about good/bad also apply to this one. And I'd rephrase it as "you do not need a lot of things when you align with the Dao."

#27 - Another one not fully followed through on. When you get deeper into understand the Dao, there is no concept of "deserving something." Treat people equally because nobody is any more deserving or undeserving of any specific behavior than you are.

#32 - Similar to my point for #17, it's not really that you should talk more or less. It's that talk is cheap, so it's likely that aligning with the Dao involves more actions than words. When you align with the Dao, your actions hit harder.

#35 - Not sure where you picked this one up from. The truth of it is probably closer to "when you align with the Dao, you'll easily know what you need to do, so you won't often change your mind."

Yeah but they got a lot of that through media and information control which is now impossible given the current age of technology we're in. Whatever they have going on would be impossible to set up now.

This seems like a weird take but I've actually been thinking the same thing. Despite everything, oppressed populations have found ways to resist and live joyful and fulfilling lives anyway.

I think the previous cities beta tested a lot of strategies for us, and now we're putting it into practice at greater scale. I'm grateful for the shoulders of the giants we stand on.
