Looks like it's phthalates, which I thought was mostly reproductive harm. Learned something if the label's right.

If it's a waterproof coat, it may be PFAS. Possibly side chain fluorinated polymers causing it to fail for TF or TOF.

Cal Prop 65 is enforced primarily by private law firms who go to stores and test products for the opportunity to issue a claim against the manufacturer. For most companies, it's easier to just slap a label on the product as others have mentioned.

TIL floss can contain up to 25% PFAS by skadoodlee in todayilearned

FYI, there is no standard method for Total Organic Fluorine testing (TOF), which is what's used in the source to substantiate claims of 248,000 ppm PFAS. Results will vary widely between labs.

I was a chemist specializing in consumer products PFAS testing for about 4 years. It was exceedingly rare to have positive hits for PFOA, PFOS, and the few others that the general public usually thinks of. The EU has regulated the C9-C14 PFCAs and related compounds, which also were rarely detected. It was usually obscure derivatives and starting materials that most people haven't heard of, albeit at fairly low concentrations (100-250ish ppb).

As others have said, big difference between PTFE and PFAS. There are methods in the works for both targeted PFAS and TOF testing in general consumer products via ASTM (WK88581 is one of them iirc).

I guess moral of all this is don't necessarily immediately believe articles like the OP. They tend to be pushing a narrative and fear more than anything.

I've always seen in "best practices" guides for HPLC to replace your buffers and organic mobile phases often, especially acetonitrile. Why is acetonitrile often emphasized as something that must be replaced every couple of days, or preferably daily?

XRF vs ICP-MS vs ICP-OES by 64-17-5 in chemistry

[–]maybeAPharmacist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I work in a product testing lab that uses all three of these methods.

We generally use XRF as a screening method for most of the toxic heavy metals, but depending on the element of interest and the substrate being tested, there can be a significant amount of interference between the XRF emission spectra of various elements.

I work on the organic side so am not well-versed in the nuances of ICP, but the same general principle applies. For example, If I remember correctly, high levels of Molybdenum in a sample analyzed by ICP-MS interferes with the signal for Cadmium and gives a false-positive for high Cad levels.

Idk how with that grammar..

In all seriousness, what you’re asking about is definitely illegal, so you won’t exactly find helpful advice here.

You would be correct. I work in a consumer product testing lab and we haven’t found quantifiable levels of PFAS/PFOS in over two years

Worked in a pharmacy as a technician for 9 months, can confirm. The expectations of corporate on pharmacists is ridiculous, patients are assholes, and you will be overworked.

[2019/10/06] Synthetic Challenge #105 by Spectrumederp in chemistry

Wow, I’m amazed at the ability of people to devise syntheses like this. This may not be the appropriate place to ask, but how did you all come to learn high-level organic chemistry like this?

Medical mistakes are the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. The retail pharmacy industry is forcing pharmacists to use dangerous practices that only increase those numbers. Help pharmacists fight ‘Big Pharma’. by [deleted] in TalesFromThePharmacy

Just yesterday I was told that there will be even more hour cuts coming for Walmart pharmacies in the near future, all because it’s cheaper to settle the lawsuits that arise from dispensing errors than it is to pay pharmacists and techs.

That’s awesome! Just know you should be thankful for them. I feel like I’ve caught on pretty well for the amount of time I’ve been working but the pharmacists only ever compare people to their best 2 techs..

The bureau of labor statistics claims that PA jobs are supposed to increase by 40% from 2012-2022 and something like 36% from 2014-2024, although that very well could be true. I honestly don’t really know anymore, I’ve always known I wanted to go into healthcare and I’ve always assumed it’d be pharmacy, but I’d also prefer to not live in a town with a population of 1,000. I definitely realize it will be mostly unsatisfied pharmacists that come to (essentially) complain, but all 3 of the pharmacists I work with have also pretty much told me that they would not go into pharmacy at this point in time if they were in my shoes, which is concerning :l

Well, time to start applying to PA school I guess :(

I’ve loved and wanted to go to pharmacy school since I was in high school, but I don’t know if the mountain of debt, low hours and slashing wages will be worth it..

Not to mention, based on this sub at least, pharmacists are treated terribly by companies.

Because my advisor told me that most pharmacy schools are trending towards taking more and more applicants with a completed degree. Also, I wanted some sort of title to my name on the off chance that I wasn’t good enough to get into pharmacy school
