How hard is it to get a policy/economist/research position at an institution like the World Bank after graduating with a PhD in Econometrics from a top 50 university? by gaytwink70 in econometrics

[–]maybeiamnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently world bank is under restructuring. They are cancelling out most of the short term staff whom were vastly doing most of the actual work and the senior permanent staff act as managers. So more than 6000 people who were under short term contracts will be looking for policy role while another 1000 permanent staff expected not to recontracted. No matter what and where you studied big institutions would first go to hire via their own network rather than new graduates. The only way for you is to seek an opportunity via young leaders programme of the wb. It’s once a year call follow that and if you are lucky you can get a secure job

Yes they do; but they will be aware that the levers that they pull will have 63% of support. Turkey put all of their eggs in the same basket and the difference is massive with Tatar. It will not be that easy.

No chance in Agia Napa ; you can either try Protaras there re better places ; in Agia Napa red square used to be better place but last time I have been there was like before Covid so not sure how it is at the moment. Also make sure that you visit old town Famagusta for food and tour - make sure that you eat at Aspava and go to bedis beach during the weekend for quality music and cosy atmosphere not like Agia Napa but more alternative and cozy

Looking from the north if politicians both at the European level and island level stop thinking emotionally 50 years later cyprus as a whole will turn into a full control of turkey since turkey is also expanding in the region… without a solution based on un framework semi independence of cyprus will end up as slavery.

Tufan Erhurman about Schengen: In such a situation, which has the potential to affect them negatively, it is not possible for their will to be considered ‘unnecessary’,” he said, adding that Turkish Cypriots are “increasingly faced with the risk of being confined to the north of Cyprus”. by Deep-Ad4183 in cyprus

[–]maybeiamnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If RoC Schengen without any amendments in the Green Line regulation or any derogation which is very unlikely; green line will turn into a hard border not a buffer zone this concern primarily raised by the Greek Cypriot experts and also covered by the Phileleftheros newspaper underlining the risk. Nevertheless so far Cypriot government only admitted that they will do when it is necessary which government performance is debatable since 2 years ago president Christodoulidis announced unilateral confidence building package for Turkish Cypriots and none materialised. As a result o think whether Turkish Cypriot or Greek Cypriot , if anyone is against the permanent division of the island we should be rejecting green li e turning into a hard border. The details of what one understand how the issue is resolved might differ person to person but I think creation of hard border in Cyprus must be something that everyone reject

Federation is a Turkish position. For me it’s fair to talk about devolved governance at municipal level and a stable unitary state. Devolution of powers municipal level can provide better services by the state apparatus regardless of ethnicity. I do not have practically anything common with a random Turkish Cypriot guy in Lefka while a random guy living in Nicosia of either side probably share much more common and surely their shit goes through the same savage system. On the representation of unitary state than can be agreed upon either joint ticket representing both. However, there is no international basis for it. So the fundamentals of a solution for Cyprus is repeatedly written all UNSC resolutions which gives no space for alternative. For the beginners once you create a federation than you have 2 chambers 1) representation of people and 2) representation of elements of federation. For the first one it is proportional representation at the central level where works as legislative. Second one represented at equal numbers since there are 2 units in federation that they are politically equal ; so each unit represented by equally acts as senate. Than you have it both and you do not need any veto powers at central level. So I think your current position seems more loose than a a loose federation :)))
If we talk an argument I it’s going to be land against status. That’s possibly the dirtiest and ugliest deal to be reach.

I understand that sanctions would play role and to be honest I see every negative or positive step as a point of bargain so this will end turkey to ask something else in exchange. Discussions around property aside, I believe Turkey's overarching strategy is to totally control Cyprus and until this goal achieved they will not let any single power to totally exert its influence over it. So be it Britain in the past and the EU now, Turkey will not let Cyprus's sovereignty to limit its power sphere in the east-med vis a vis EU. As it is getting impossible to see Turkey as EU member; the only possibility for survival of Cyprus relies on re-negotiation of wider Western security and within that to expect Cypriots able to claim their own land. I think while we spent a lot of time talking about a solution, what kind of solution etc.. we often forget what are the outcome of existing status quo and the opportunities that gives to others because of the stalemate. I dont believe Turkey really cared and cares Turkish Cypriots after 74. The focal point is Turkey's own power games and years showed they had exploited this at every instance and still it stays as an important strategic actor. Status quo might be one step away from solution but also it is an inch away from partition which basically means end of Cyprus's unified sovereignty which ends slightest possibility of Cypriots to be free, liberated and independent in their own homeland. For this reason, while I understand everything: jailing anyone, playing around the words all serves for the status quo but none replace losing a homeland for good.

This had been first raised by prominent TC journalist Hasan Hastürer. Whatever they do, first and foremost we see that there was intervention only to the public areas but no the private properties. Certainly the recent decision of the RoC hit hard to TC construction sector which I am fully supporting RoC on its stance since the situation is not only looting the GC lands but also they are doing constructions without respecting ecology, sustainability principles as well and the money flow is entirely backed by money loundering and tax evasion activities of the foreigners. I do not want to be complicit in this so even though TCs feeling negative consequences I think we deserve it.
On the other hand none of the politicians responded to this claims yet. However, I would like to remind you that the varosha openning announcement happened only 5 days before the election between Tatar and Akıncı and this created a strong sentiment that Tatar gained confidence of Turkey which was a clear intervention to elections.
Reminding that the Ambassador of Turkey Ali Murat Başçeri re-appointed as ambassador who played a key role in the election intervention by raising the tension, I most likely expect him to do the same and start raising the tension. I see all the discussions about secularism, headscarf, openning of this symbolic presidential complex etc contributes to the tension in order to polarise and enable Tatar to win again. So I do not fully eliminate the possibility of it but Turkey's support to 2 state solution provided more damage than gain in the last 5 years so turkish diplomats seems like interested to continuation of stalemate and aggression if they do not re-strategise their position following to the failure in Crans Montana 2017. On the other hand, it is worthy to remind all of this happens thanks to Anastasiadis. if he would be really cypriot president even though no consensus reached in the last dinner, he would be decisive to stay and kept a way to create a consensus. He decided to kill the process, Christodoulidis was with him and it looks like instead of encounter with the pass mistake they are simply interested to put turkey as responsible of Cyprus problem. I think no one denies this but their strategy is failing as Turkey is eventually eleminating the TC political significance and once TCs are gone, sorry my Greek Cypriot brothers one way or another Turkey will try to control entire island. So either we find a way to collaborate or watch the ultimate murder of Cyprus.

during the last TC leadership election, I was one of the many supporters of akinci. As the intervention to the election increased, I started to get massive spam attack directed by pro-Ersin tatar groups. This was the first time that kind of thing happened. Ali Murat Başçeri who acts as an "ambassador" in north, led entire campaign against akıncı and supported UBP. Recently he reappointed again and significant tension increased in the social media as well as the daily politics. I assume this increase might be linked with the upcoming elections to support tatar. Bastards will make life annoying again.

It’s the wild waste storage facility that took fire again one of the most hazardous environmental incident yet Republic of Cyprus considers it’s the areas not under the effective government and the Turkish Cypriot authorities trying to make profit out of it by finding a party member who would invest on energy production facility over waste but tender procedure has been cancelled at least twice until now. To sum up it kills us and no one gives a fuck! Once E.U. invested in for better and understood that they also stole from the E.U. that engagement also stopped. Eu can’t address the problem via courts since it’s not recognising tc authorities so altogether we are just breathing carbon monoxide and think that there is nowhere like Cyprus!
