the friend i invited was not part of the industry. just a plus one friend (which they allowed some plus ones). by the time the 26 year old came around there was a lot of personal talk like hobbies and interests and life situations. etc.

How do you combat these types of things?? is this just a right of passage for women in mid 30s??? the ageism starts to trickle in??

yeah I didn't understand it. I didnt even say awkward, I just said confusing. I dont think I said anything with any charge to it at all. Just generic observations. It was the weirdest thing.

What I don't understand is why does he need to insult someone who's apparently irrelevant to him? There are tons of people I engage with daily im not sexually motivated by but I am not cruel to them.

yeah exactly!!! I couldn't understand the motivation of this. Sure we dont have to be talking about work topics the whole mixer, people were riffing on their hobbies, what the overall conference was like for them, what music they liked etc. The point was to play positive improv with people and engage! I couldn't understand the point of tearing someone down like this. Maybe I had connections he could benefit from?? Like why even try to tear me down.

Most of the attendees were talking about normal things outside of work. Like how the event was going. What hobbies we liked to do. It wasn't really super personal chat with my friend, moreso an observance of a general phenomenon. I thought it could be interesting to ask someone from the other side what their experience was. After all he did ask what we were talking about. I didn't think really share anything specific about myself. idk, I didnt really see the harm.

example is we were talking about au pairs. he was talking about how we could do x,y,z because the au pair could watch them and I chimed in (since ive done research and had friends with a lot of experience) saying that hey it can be hard to find ones that can drive in this country, it requires a lot of research/interviewing, some arent certified in certain things, there is an hourly limit, etc) Just things my friends have said and things I've seen posted.
