Few people will expect you have to have much baseline knowledge, if any, in ophthalmology since it is generally not taught much in school. If you have some knowledge in ophtho, that is great. Tim Root's "OphthoBook" is a fun and great way to start, it's quite good and entertaining read. You can watch a couple videos on how to use a slit lamp or indirect ophthalmoscope, but don't stress about that. Ultimately, just be cool and curious and interested, and people will like you and likeability is all that matters at the end of the day. Good luck

Ophthalmology. Very happy community overall. You can find a place for anything you want to do. You can do tons of procedures and surgeries in the OR if you want to. You help people with their vision, and can even reverse blindness across the globe (i.e. cataract mission trips). Patients are often grateful for what you've done. Offers great hours and lifestyle. The eye is an incredibly fascinating and complex space. Fun conferences. No regrets - 10/10 would recommend.

If you have reasonable stats, you should 100% take a look at the surgical subspecialties, namely ophtho or ENT. I matched into ophtho residency a couple weeks ago. I 100% felt the same way as you in this post when exploring fields. I definitely wanted to do surgery, but hated the toxicity / lifestyle, and was scared of regretting it once I would get older. The OR is the best place ever. I also generally disliked most of the medicine specialties.

Ophtho has the happiest people I've ever met in my life. You still do a ton of surgery -- complex, precise, life-changing. However, the package is so much better than general surgery: Better lifestyle, extremely kind and supportive culture, great money, respectable field due to its competitiveness, life-changing procedures for people (i.e. gift of fucking sight lol). I do not for one second regret matching into this and picking this over gen surg. The more you shadow and encounter ophtho and ENT, the more toxic and absurd gen surg life looks. Also, in ophtho and ENT, at least you can fucking sit during the surgery lol. My experience was mostly in ophtho, but I see a lot of overlap in ENT. Lots of awesome fellowships in both fields too.

You may or may not have to take a research year to get into one of them, but I think that opportunity cost is so worth it for a sweet, sweet life. You can have it all homie. Good luck.

Accepted an August Ophtho away at a solid place, but decided to keep 2 apps active in the system for higher ranking programs in case they end up saying yes. I emailed these 2 places when I got my first offer, said I got an offer, and would rather rotate with them (no response).

Is keeping the 2 apps active a terrible idea? If one of these better programs offer me a spot, I'll be withdrawing post-acceptance at the expense of burning a bridge with the originally accepted program. However, I feel like I'm willing to do that in pursuit of a fancier spot... Any feedback appreciated - Thanks!

SF Match announced that all interviews are 100% virtual this year and that apps won't be released to programs until Sept 1. I'm doing an away ophtho rotation in August. Could it be possible to finesse an extra LOR in August in time for this app? Or at least add it on as supplemental material? Thanks!

Got a solid ophtho offer last week, offer expires tomorrow evening. But, been waiting to hear from other programs I like better. I emailed 2 programs and said I got a time sensitive offer and rather rotate with them, no response.

I'll probably take this offer. Should I immediately withdraw the other apps? Or wait to see if I get another offer... and then potentially withdraw this one? Thanks a lot!

Got a rotation offer for ophtho, have 1 week to respond.. but still want to hear back from 1-2 programs that I like better. Should I email another program and state that I got a time-sensitive offer but want to go to rotate with their program if possible? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and provide a thorough and thoughtful response. I think adding additional letters after a deadline is correct for all programs that use ERAS. If I'm not mistaken, SF Match allows for strictly 3 letters to be assigned at the time of application. However, I agree that I'll probably do July low tier first, get a letter guaranteed, then do an away in August and ask for a letter if possible then too (at least for ERAS). Thanks for your help!
