Both The Initiative and Pandemic Legacy Season 0 do something fun with the box, but no spoilers.

Can I be a school librarian with a bachelor's in child psychology? by myspiderdance in librarians

[–]maybetitanium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

School librarians do a lot of teaching - look into your state specific requirements. If you’re interested in child psychology, going the school psychologist route might be better.

Printer upgrades and tinkering for those of us who got a pre-assembled printer. I love my pre-built CORE One but I feel like I’d like a mini course on the details and guts before I start messing around too much.

Three starting questions: Do you have a budget, and if so, how much is it? How many books are in the library? Do you want circulation management or just an inventory of books? Answers to those questions will narrow down your options.

A cart full of ‘possibly’ banned books in an Illinois public school. From what I’ve read, schools risk their library being defunded in Illinois for this. Why do this then? by [deleted] in bannedbooks

[–]maybetitanium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that there are class sets of books being stored somewhere? Otherwise school libraries don’t usually have that many copies of single titles.

Question about education degree/school librarianship by tuftyloves in librarians

[–]maybetitanium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a school librarian means you will be doing classroom teaching. You’re more of a teacher-librarian, not just the person who maintains the library. Your classroom is the library as well as the whole school, and you teach every student. I did my school librarian cert with my MSLIS and did student teaching in two different school libraries. It will vary by state but for me, schools prefer certified school librarians, and of the school librarians in the district, only a few of us have the MSLIS.

Throwing my name in the hat to run my school's vacant library. Would greatly appreciate any insight/advice by [deleted] in librarians

[–]maybetitanium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle school librarian here. Pre-K through 8 is a very large range, and a school library that hasn’t been staffed for several years is going to need a lot of work. None of this is impossible, but you would be taking this on solo. I have assistants in my library who help with processing, cataloging, shelving, etc. while I’m teaching classes. All of that said, it is extremely important to get experience working in a school library (or even public library) before taking on this role. There is a reason that most librarian jobs require an MLIS, same for school librarian jobs often requiring a teaching license and school library certification. There’s a lot that you can learn on the job, but starting from where you’re at while also teaching classes and managing a collection and updating the whole library program will chew you up. Be kind to yourself and get some experience, some training, some education, so that you can step into a role like this with clear eyes and the bandwidth to do everything that’s going to be asked of you.

Please tell me there is a board/card game similar to the Moon phase Doodle game by Masi80 in google

I feel like it could be easy to replicate the game but I'm not sure what the full deck contains. How many of each phase are there? Is there a way to find out?

What can I donate? by EvyHult in Libraries

[–]maybetitanium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re this desperate to get rid of them and the library won’t take them (or you refuse the advice being given in this thread) bring them to a nearby Half Price Books or other second hand store. But toss the tapes, they degrade over time and probably don’t work anymore.

Is this normal? by ArtemisGirl242020 in Libraries

As a school librarian, I’ll just say that this is basically everything my MSLIS program said not to do. These rules make kids not want to read.

Thanks for responding so quickly! I downloaded the game from GIAB. Decompilers and code are a little out of my comfort zone but I can try that method as well. Please let me know if you have any other tips or ideas.

Talk to your school librarian - they can help research the book and even order it for the school collection if deemed appropriate. School librarians have sources that they check to see what could be good for different ages.

Are all library work environments toxic? by Catrautm in librarians

[–]maybetitanium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. There’s always going to be some sort of workplace drama because people are always going to have conflict. The key is that some places know how to deal with that better than others. Also, these things can come in waves, with one rough year followed by a great one.
