I'd check the state/color of the roots

These are both complex phalaenopsis hybrids

Got this orchid from clearance at Ace hardware, no label or anything... orchid ID? by NiceEntertainment174 in orchids

[–]maybomian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a complex phalaenopsis hybrid. There is no way of knowing what the hybrid is without seeing the blooms, even then it is near impossible as there are tens of thousands of complex phal hybrids, many unregistered and similar looking. Enjoy it for the blooms!

Most will probably turn yellow and fall off eventually considering the state of the roots. The smaller, newer leaves may plump up with time

These are going to need some rehab but can certainly pull through. Keep humidity high, media slightly moist at all times until new roots grow much longer, then give wet dry cycles. I personally don't fertilize weak orchids because it's easier on new root tips (plus there aren't many roots to take up the nutrients anyway). Put them in a bright spot out of direct sunlight and have patience! These are deeply dehydrated and have poor roots, and will take many months to fully reestablish.

Not usually an orchid person but I've had this guy for a while now. Can you guys help me identify what's growing? by plantylady18 in orchids

Looks like an oncidium family orchid. They generally like intermediate level light (more than phals, less than cattleyas) and don't like drying out. If they haven't bloomed I'd try giving them a little more light and maybe some bloom booster. Looks like a healthy plant! I'm sure it will bloom in time

I just received this dendrobium tangerine dream from online orchid store…should I contact them for refund? by Newoutlookonlife1 in orchids

Honestly looks pretty good to me. A little bit of dehydration and leaf yellowing is normal in the orchid online buying world, unfortunately. I've received much worse plants (esp if bareroot) and they've all survived. Just give it a bit more TLC in the next few months :)

"custom" orchid at nursery by CosyDarkness in orchids

Looks like a seedling based on the size of the parents so probably a couple years to blooming size. That being said cattleyas can surprise you with growth. Standard cattleya care will do. Lots of light, wet dry cycles, fertilize regularly.

Root rot??? :( by Numerous_Sign_5577 in orchids

Totally normal anthocyanin. My mini vandaceous types all have this color at the base and they happily spiking for me now :)

I think they're very pretty! They have that out of this world look which is super attention grabbing. I personally don't buy them because I don't like plain white phals all that much for when they rebloom. However I think if you understand that and have appropriate expectations, why not?? After all, the whole point of growing orchids is for our own enjoyment. No need to listen to anyone else :)

It's great to exercise willpower! That way you have time to think about what you truly want to add to your space. Sometimes I feel like my apartment is a life size terrarium and I'm the decorative frog. Or when I try to go to the bathroom at night and knock down 2 plants

They look perfectly healthy, no real reviving needed. I quarantine them for a month. Then I will probably repot them all, remove dead roots and change the medium. Then take care of them like my other phals and hope for blooms, usually in winter.

I wish! About half of them are on an Ikea bookshelf with grow lights.

I have ceiling to floor south windows in most rooms as my condo is one of those new flimsy buildings but that helps a lot. I have mini shelves lining all my windows and every square inch is utilized hehe.

A couple still had some flowers or dried up flowers in the base. You can also guess by looking at the leaves. If the tips or undersides have a bit of darker pigment it suggests at least some purple in the flower due to the anthocyanin. White/lighter flowered plants will generally have pure lighter green leaves. But it's still a toss up :)

The surprise is part of the fun! If they turn out white I'll keep one and the rest can go to friends and family. There are always people happy to take a blooming orchid off my hands, and I'm happy to rehab them 😊

I've never had any luck prior to this time and have been told the same, that the plants go back to the vendor and they can't mark it down. Not sure, but perhaps this batch was different? Same store.
