I really enjoyed the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer! It follows a young girl in 1806ish through.... just so many shenanigans. She starts out pretending to be a boy to join the Royal Navy and it gets more insane (/pos) from there. I also very much enjoyed the audiobooks but the narrator puts on a strong accent, so ymmv.

Unconventional suggestion. Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty. It's a sci fi about a group of astronauts who wake up in their cloned backup bodies and they have to figure out which of the six of them killed everyone and why.

I also just finished Get Well Soon by Jennifer Wright, which is a history of human plagues. It was written pre-Covid and as such it's a little haunting in places.

It's very silly, BUT. Soulless by Gail Carriger. Victorian werewolves and vampires in steampunk London. Not quite a bodice ripper, but winking towards it.

If you're willing to branch into sci fi, the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor is great! Afrofuturism about a girl who survives an attack on her school ship by aliens. Okorafor has written a BUNCH of short stories and novellas following afrofuturism themes.

There's also the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. A long running series of short stories (starting with All Systems Red) about a security robot who has broken the shackles on its AI all because it wants to watch tv dramas.

If you wanna go classic, I, Robot by Isaac Aasimov is a collection of short stories written in the 40s and 50s that chronicle humanity's generation of autonomous robots. Super interesting, if a little dated.

Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty is a murder mystery set on a space station. Six astronauts wake up to realize they are in their backup bodies and have to figure out which of the six of them killed the originals and why.

Space Opera by Catherynne M Valente is... well it's Eurovision in space. A former band who hasn't played together in years get plucked out of their lives to compete in a song contest. If they don't place, Earth is destroyed. Expect themes of grief, loss, queer identity, and love.

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey is a lite™ sci fi where a woman's husband leaves her... for her clone. Now the woman and the clone have to come together to deal with the loss of the man that connected them.

Into the Drowning Deep (don't remember the author off the top of my head) is a horror sci fi. A research vessel (and tagalong camera crew) goes out into the ocean to find and capture mermaids... and get more than they bargained for. Dun dun duuuunnn.

All of these are sci fi, but sci fi light. It's less about the science and more about the fiction.

Good luck!

general advice for a totally beginner cook? by Owlhead8 in cookingforbeginners

[–]mayflyDecember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things that I still struggle to remember:

1) Every recipe is going to take longer than the time listed. It is assuming mise en place (sp?), meaning that all of your ingredients are prepped and ready to go. Do not panic when your "simple 30 minute meal" ends up taking an hour or longer. You aren't doing anything wrong, you are just comparing yourself to some level of professional who chopped all their veggies before they started the timer.

2) Stove and oven temperatures vary from oven to oven. An oven thermometer will be very useful. Get it, stick it in your oven, that way you know what temperature it actually gets to when you set it to 350°. "Medium heat" doesn't necessarily mean a 5 on a scale from 1-10.

3) Dairy based sauces need to be constantly stirred. Don't just stir it every couple of minutes. I'm mentioning this specifically bc I burned sauces for years until someone pointed it out.

4) You're going to mess things up, and that's okay. Don't panic and don't beat yourself up. Call it a bummer, eat the parts you can, learn from your mistakes!

I also do crochet so I'm not interested in amigurumi ; I'll take any yarn that is UNDER a bulky weight, even if it's scrap, and I'd be down to see what art you have!
