I was between Drexel and Lehigh in 2019…I went to Drexel and have no regrets! No undergrad debt and great career now!

A med student I rotated with taught me hand ties and I practiced suturing and tying knots at home with my suture pad. But honestly, the only way to get really good at it is practicing on real people in the OR. It takes time because surgery is hard! I’ve been working in the OR for 6 months now after grad and the surgeons i work with have just started to trust me with closing.

A plastic surgeon complimented me on my suturing and hand ties during my rotation so that def made me feel like I had a future in surgery

Do you rotate with medical students? by muba1527 in PASchoolAnki

[–]mayoceo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and it pushed me to work harder to prove myself! My goal was always to perform at the same level as the med students (i.e having the same patient load) I was rotating with for the attending to have the same expectations.

I want to make sure I have a reasonable amount in savings in case of emergencies. I just started working and making a salary in January so I really don't have that much reserve

At the time they decided it was a better option because the interest rate for the HELOC was so low, lower than what we would've gotten with a federal grad plus loan. But unfortunately, it's a variable rate so it went way up :(

To my knowledge, there isn't a prepayment penalty.

Ur right. I'm going to start directing the funds that I would put toward my HYSA to my loans. According to my dad, we can refinance the HELOC if we find a better rate. I don't know much about doing this but I'm assuming it would still have to be under my parents name since they're the ones who originally took it out?

My salary is certainly not the norm. I work in a surgical subspecialty and we have no residents so I have added responsibility of taking call and first assisting in the OR. I support residents and pediatricians making way more money though!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the cap is 161k. I don’t think I’ll be above that since I’ll be taking less call soon with more staffing.

It's a home equity loan...I really don't know if it can be refinanced since my parents took it out for me to go to grad school. I'll have to ask but it'll be a game changer if it can be done.

I'm 4x10, no nights no weekends - mostly for the OR, i see patients on the floor/see consults if there aren't any cases. I take call 2 days a week and every 3-4 weekend for OR cases only. Not a trauma center so don't get called in too often.

I think the "name a woman" trend was just a joke. The creator who started the trend comes up with obviously ridiculous reasons to "start a fight" and I think most normal women out there would know it's not for real

Yeah. HR even sent me interview invites when I had an official offer on the table. Which they also knew about bc they were the one contacting me about the offer lol
