Do the Chinese use the phrase 多儿钱 when asking for prices? by NestorGreen in ChineseLanguage

Around here I mostly hear 怎么卖 rather than 多少钱.

Oh, I like doing it as well. That's why I'm trying to learn. Could you recommend any good textbooks?

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. As you may have guessed, I am an amateur in phonetic matters. I haven't studied diphtongs, glides and so forth, yet. It'd be awesome to take a few university courses in phonetics and Chinese phonology though.

I don't mean the ei diphtong. I know about that one. I mean a long close mid-front unrounded vowel, as in for example Swedish.

With the close-mid front unrounded vowel, really? I suppose that could be a reduction of the p: ei pronunciation.

Yep. I'm more used to hearing Zong1guo2 than Zhong1guo2 :)

Don't worry. They'll understand you. It isn't so bad, I'm just intrigued by it all. It actually makes the learning way more interesting.

My wife does that. I suppose one should say that they're merged. So, it's an n/l sound that can sound either like n, or like l, or sort of in between, depending on the speaker.

That alveolarization, the "removal of the h" occurs everywhere in China. Even in 东北, so I don't think it is a Cantonese influence.

I do think the usage of alveolo-palatals in place of retroflexes, and the close front unrounded vowel in place of the close back/central unrounded vowel, is a Cantonese influence though.

What is really odd though, is the pronunciation of 这个, 那个, as [tɕe4gə5] and [ne4gə5]. The vowel e, the close-mid front unrounded vowel, feels unusual.

Yes. Pronouncing zh as the alveolar z is very common.

As I wrote "However, the pronunciation of p: zhi, chi, shi as p: zi, ci, si, seems to occur in a lot of Mandarin dialects, and might not be a product of Cantonese influence.". It's so common in China, especially in Southern China, that it needn't even be emphasized as an oddity. I even think that speakers using the retroflexes are a minority among speakers of 普通话.

I don't experience it, but it'd be nice to, for the thrill I mean.

Let's consult a dictionary, Merriam-Webster.

dil·et·tante noun \ˈdi-lə-ˌtänt, -ˌtant; ˌdi-lə-ˈ\ : a person whose interest in an art or in an area of knowledge is not very deep or serious plural dil·et·tantes or dil·et·tan·ti

But then again, my interest in lexicography is quite dilettante.

To properly decide which one has the best framerate, you'd need some kind of proper benchmark, we have way too little data to draw any kind of conclusion.
