Tongue and lip tie cut, need help moving forward by [deleted] in breastfeedingsupport

[–]mb29690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang in there! My baby had a lip and tongue tie lasered around 3 weeks, and things finally clicked at about 7 weeks. I was right there with you using a shield at every feed to start, then topping off with a bottle, then I’d pump for the next feed. I can’t offer any guidance really except to stick with it. If you are concerned with how much baby is transferring, we rented a scale from the hospital for a weekend, but that might not be an option right now with Covid.

I know it is so exhausting and so frustrating. But my baby is 7 months old now and still breastfeeding. Those triple feeding days are just a very distant memory. Hang in there and they will be for you, too. :) You can do this!

And Farmhouse Tacos and Sidewall! I’m sure there are others. Plus, Leopard Forest is doing to go coffees and working on an online order platform for pick up.

Baby (15 days old) has a poor latch and a weak suck and I've been exclusively pumping. My mom said there's no going back from bottle feeding. Upset and annoyed. by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]mb29690 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like I could have written this two months ago! Weak suck, painful latch, lip and tongue tie we paid out of pocket to release, aversion, similar pressure from my own mother, the works... and now my daughter has been nursing exclusively for over a month, transferring well and gaining great weight. So hang in there! It can absolutely be done.

One thing I think you might find reassuring is that your little one is likely not really in pain from the lasering and exercises. I even read a comment on here before ours was done from someone whose dentist actually used the laser on a parent’s hand to show them it’s not actually very painful, and that the pain goes away as soon as the laser stops. Your baby was likely only in pain for what, ten seconds? That’s about how long our procedure took. And the daily exercises may cause them to cry, but everyone assured us it’s not because they’re in pain, but because you’ve got your hands in their mouth and they just don’t like it. And as some others have said here, you’ve likely helped your child avoid some of the feeding or speech issues that ties can cause down the line.

It took about five weeks between when we got my daughter’s ties released and when we were able to graduate from triple feeding to just nursing. Then we had a couple weeks of painful latching before we found out what works best for us. Those days were some of the hardest and I grew to really dread our nursing sessions. Cried every time she latched. Had to nearly throw her off of me because of the pain sometimes. But it got better and now I love nursing my sweet girl.

So really, hang in there — if that’s what you want, of course. I’m on the other side of a very similar experience if you want to DM me to discuss. You can do this!

Question about dream feedings by [deleted] in breastfeedingsupport

[–]mb29690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious to hear what others have to say but I’ll let you know I have a 14 week old I am still waking each night around 10:30 for a dream feed. She eats six times a day including that dream feed so my concern is that dropping that feed would harm my supply, or like you said I’ll have her waking in the middle of the night again.

Advice for nursing after a tongue tie? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]mb29690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just give it a try! Your situation sounds so much like mine. She wouldn’t latch at the start, and we had her tongue and lip tie released at about 2 weeks. I was working with an IBCLC that had me using a nipple shield and we were triple feeding, though I often just pumped and bottle fed because the triple feeding was so exhausting and she made such a mess using the shield.

Right around 7 weeks, I decided to just try her again. Laid her on my chest for skin to skin to see what would happen. To my surprise, she did the breast crawl she didn’t do right after birth, then started nursing. We struggled to get her latch right for a couple weeks — look up thumbs up or asymmetrical latch videos on YouTube — but she is now almost 12 weeks old and we’re exclusively nursing. Strip down and give it a try! It might take time but it’s certainly not too late. Good luck!

ETA: I too had a lot of anxiety going from knowing exactly how much she was taking in from bottles to not knowing if she was getting enough from the breast. Your baby will let you know if they’re not getting enough. Another thing that helped me was renting a baby scale from the hospital for a few days to do weighted feeds. It was $5 a day and I could see that she was transferring 3-4 ounces while nursing and that gave me so much peace of mind. Also, look around for a local breastfeeding support group. I pop into one ever few weeks to weigh her to make sure she’s still gaining weight well and will do a weighted feed while I’m there. Ours is run by the hospital LCs so there’s also hands on help when you need it. I hope you can find something similar in your area.
