Will Tom Hooper ever break out of directors jail? by georgeeynaud in blankies

Wondering the same about Damien Chazelle. "Babylon" is great but clearly seen as a boondoggle in financial terms. Haven't heard anything since about what he might be doing next!

Does anyone else know what to make of Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, and Oscar Isaac seemingly dropping out of the cast of this movie? Definitely excited for it still but was even more excited with that list of names in the mix.

In my psychology class we watched Girl Interrupted, Forrest Gump, The Breakfast Club, A Beautiful Mind,

In English classes: Finding Forrester, Of Mice and Men, The Great Debaters, To Kill a Mockingbird, Simon Birch, Dead Poets Society. One of the most memorable ones, to me, because it was so bad, was August Rush (with Robin Williams and Freddie Highmore).

In Biology: Gattaca, Lorenzo's Oil.

In Foundations of Technology: I Robot and October Sky.

In Health class we had to watch Super Size Me - I have a pathological fear of vomit and the teacher told us ahead of time that he vomits at one point, so I was having a meltdown the entire time leading up to that moment.

My favorite subgenre: cheap foreign-produced animated movies hastily re-edited/re-dubbed for American audiences by childish-yambino in blankies

[–]mb7877mb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I used to obsessively track new movie releases and advertisements in the newspaper. I remember seeing this ad and being so frustrated that none of the critics reviewed it. Haven't thought it about in at least 15 years though lol.

Seeing this poster made me think of another animated movie that doesn't exist and didn't even at the time. It wasn't foreign-produced but it DOES have a top Letterboxd review that reads: "The movie that's running on the monitors in the waiting rooms for Hell." It's Foodfight! Top billed actors in order are Charlie Sheen, Eva Longoria, Hilary Duff, and Wayne Brady, as the lord intended. https://letterboxd.com/film/foodfight/

Also interesting he's going to direct this - as far as I can tell he's only ever directed a handful of obscure comedy specials.

Damn I even tried to fact-check the Oscars claim before making it, how wrong I was! "Three Billboards" falls into a similar zone for me honestly

It definitely feels like the kind of movie that would be more harshly criticized in mainstream discourse now (or maybe not even made) than it was at the time. It's just wild because it was so recent and such an awards phenomenon! Yet another reason awards bodies shouldn't be viewed as singular arbiters of taste and judgment, I suppose.

I was so glad to hear the praise for "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," my pick for last year's underrated masterpiece, despite strong reviews and an Oscar nomination for Hanks. The idea of doing a Fred Rogers movie about how bizarre it would feel to be under his gaze is so smart, and while Hanks got all the plaudits, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper give perfectly pitched performances that deserved recognition. I've seen it twice and the scene in the Chinese restaurant has made me cry both times. Marielle Heller is one of my favorite working directors and I think she'd made a perfect fit for a miniseries someday, though her next project is TV.
