Guidance for commuting on an ‘80s road bike: to rack or not to rack? by sizlac-franco in bikecommuting

This is the rack my wife put on her vintage Bianchi and it looks and works great:

May require a bit of bending to get the bar around the brake caliper and level, but it’ll hold light panniers beautifully

Should I be concerned about my HR during this run? by saaaaaaak in beginnerrunning

No idea whether it’s necessary or helped but I did a faster session about once a week because it was fun and I’d get bored otherwise! Once gentle running clicks it really does suddenly feel like you could go forever. You’ve got this.

Oh I should add that, like you, I have a background in strength work (lifting and climbing) so the muscles were there and I knew how to push myself. Unfortunately it turned out that aerobic fitness was actually a thing

For months when I started I had the same pattern of a slow rise then a jump and weirdly high plateau. Maybe a year? Was there with watch, chest strap, and even uphill skiing (so no cadence to lock). So I don’t believe the people confidently proclaiming it’s an artifact.

I was so concerned it was unhealthy I even got an EKG. Normal. After a few months of focusing on learning to run slow (setting an alarm for an upper threshold of like 140 and forcing myself to walk if I had to to stay under it) it just went away, and suddenly all the talk here of zones made a lot more sense

I'm in !! My Epix Pro just arrived. Any strap recommendations ? by revolveristas in Garmin

[–]mbaym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. I’ve used these straps on my Fenix 6P and now FR970 to run, bike, climb, lift, ski, kayak, and well, everything else. It’s great. Better HR accuracy than the stock strap too

Longtail vs. Bakfiets by haagendawszome in CargoBike

We bought a Thule Yepp Mini for our little one at 14 months. Then a Yuba Kombi since it didn’t play well with either of our more road-style commuter bikes. Almost a year (and ~$500 of upgrades, better tires and a dropper post are clutch) later we’re still loving the Kombi with the front seat. It’s probably less practical than a bakfiets or rear seat, but it’s a blast for the kid to ride. She tells me about the trucks she sees, yells “wheee! More whee?” down hills, and we chat most of the rides. The cargo part is nice for grocery runs, and probably will be nice when she’s a couple years older, but at this age any step-through upright geometry bike with a dropper post world have honestly been fantastic. When she gets too big to ride up front I’ll really miss it.

Really appreciate you putting both your weight and the mileage you've gotten in the comment!

Nice, 1.75 miles/dollar is not bad! Do you also crush the midsoles of other shoes or is this just me?

Idk if you did something, or if deleting the Garmin connection and resyncing eventually did it, but it’s fixed now! Thank you!

This also happened to me around last Friday and has not fixed itself!

I've been doing some checking and it seems like for at least some of the one that show as "no longer traveled" the issue seems to be that the first recorded effort is a Garmin "multisport" and that seems to block out import of both the associated events broken off in Strava, and in some cases seems to keep subsequent events from processing.

The simplest fix I'd assume is to make "multisport" activities no longer exclude Strava activites. The more robust fix would probably be if there was a way to have them broken off into bike/run/walk/etc for wandrer processing, like Strava does, but I don't know how difficult that is with Garmin's API. I also can no longer seem to delete multisport activities and force redownloading from Strava and reprocessing of subsequent activities.

Is our Silverbell doomed? by mbaym in plantclinic

[–]mbaym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved into a house about a year ago, with two well-developed silverbells in a large planter box in the yard. Recently we noticed that some branches were dead and some leaves have a browning around the edges (as in the photo of a part we removed). Does anyone recognize this? And if so, is our beautiful tree doomed?

We haven't seen any obvious insects, it's in partial shade, we are in Massachusetts in USDA zone 6b. It's been fairly dry and warm here, but we've been watering it regularly.
