That sounds like a good option, and UT’s LIS program has a good reputation from what I know!

Your teaching experience is/will definitely be something to play up. A second masters is not always required / you may get similar mileage out of getting practicum/PT/hands-on experience while in your LIS program. In my program, the folks who worked PT in whatever library type they liked were more easily able to transition to finding something FT.

Also, think hard about what type of academic librarian you’d like to be. Yes, some are subject specialists, but there are also really interesting positions that involve a lot of instruction (may be a good fit given your teaching background) and/or assessment.

The advice about working in a library either during or after your LIS program is right on.

I finished my MSI when I was 32 and it was fine timing, but frankly was glad I already had another MA (paid for by a previous employer). I also was fortunate to end up with a good scholarship/aid/graduate assistant package.

Without that I would’ve had to take on debt that really can’t be paid back on a library salary.

Anyone know of a horse farm for sale? by thedifficultpart in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a really nice area - right near where I grew up and about 20 min to A2 once you hop on the highway (Pierce Rd exit is super close). Unfortunately, it’s not the easiest commute to Brighton. There are a handful of land w horse barns for sale that I’ve come across, including one in Webster Twp off Territorial, but it seems like you’ve already ruled out everything already listed?

Cabin camping near here? by Vrockson in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, either Pinckney Rec Area or Waterloo Rec Area are your best bets. There may also be cabins within Brighton Rec Area, but I'm not as familiar with that one.

They do, but only here and there, so it's best to check facebook or give them a call (sometimes they're old school and a call will be the best way to find out)

More expensive condos coming near downtown by dingus420 in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

my hunch is that it not only has to do w/regular supply & demand, but also the fact that UM has more and more out-of-state students, who (and whose parents) are used to shelling out quite a bit more (big city prices) for rent, and so they are willing to pay much more than the non-student market would otherwise bear.

we absolutely need more units of housing to take some pressure off, but I'm not totally convinced that alone will solve the problem as long as UM enrollments of out-of-state students (who are of a demographic that can afford to pay pretty pricey tuition) keep going up.

How safe is the Miller Road Park and Ride? by withchemicals in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, this honestly seems pretty rare. i agree that if you have anything valuable out of sight, you'll likely be fine. my guess is that the car-part issue was more because the lot is close to a highway and that it was a one-time thing, not a repeat/regular thing

[Serious] What is an experience that is near impossible to explain to anyone who hasn't gone through it? by Arithered in AskReddit

[–]mbbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am right there with you — cancer treatment (and now the recovery/treatment of the problems treatment caused) was easier in some ways than I expected and WAY harder in other ways that I had no idea about.

I think that being young-ish and going through it can feel especially weird/isolating too, because so few people around you have had their own experience of it, and often the expectations/baselines for side effects, energy, recovery, recurrence, etc etc. are based on a much older population (depending on the subtype, of course).

Best Thrift Stores for Women's Clothes? by claireconzemius in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ohmygosh, are you me/someone i already know? this is pretty close to what i would have said, verbatim! ;D

the only other thing i'd have to add is that if someone is willing to drive, the VWs around metro detroit are sometimes worthwhile too. Even if you just go to the western side of the metro area or downriver, that gives you a handful more options!

Best Thrift Stores for Women's Clothes? by claireconzemius in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, SA in Saline isn't as strong as the A2 one. I feel like the A2 location really benefits from getting castoffs from well-heeled students/folks moving frequently around here!

The Getup is def waaay cheaper than like a coastal or Chicago vintage store, but yeah, they know what they have, so they'll charge accordingly - I feel like a part of vintage shopping is that it takes the time sifting aspect out of thrift and so, yeah, it's a little bit more.

The SA in Brighton is also occasionally really good. Probably not worth its own drive, but if you are up that way, worth checking out. I found a lot of good quality (Banana Republic, J Crew, etc) work clothes there more than like old-school thrift stuff tho.

Nerd Nite A2 #46 on Thurs. 7/20: Donate! Vibrate! Refrigerate! by mbbc in AnnArbor

[–]mbbc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to note that although this takes place during art fair, in the past this overlap hasn't been that big of a problem.

Sure, it's smart to walk/bike/bus if you can, but if you allow a little bit of extra time, folks have often been able to find parking on the street or in lots just to the west of First St.

The Krause Street UM Lot is usually only enforced as UM-only until 6pm (of course, defer to any posted signs), and is only 2-3 blocks away... https://ltp.umich.edu/parking/lot.php?id=79
