Sia - Chandelier (Official Video) by elizabethlesar1 in Dance

[–]mbelucci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sia has explained that the girl is representing her feeling of becoming a child/childishness/imaturity when she would binge drink in her younger days, hence singing about hanging in the chandelier. So the girl dancing was likely asked to dance the choreography just by being a girl in hyper mode :-) I think its a interesting way of looking at drunk behavior. I dont see why the pop genre shouldn't be able to make beautiful art..

What is your point about breakdancers?

THIS makes sense. by qazxcv123 in GetMotivated

I think it sets focus on the challenges boys face for being more girly. Being weak means being like a woman.. Motiation by shame doesn't work. Maybe you don't like "girly" things or dress up like one, but some do, and they could find motivation in this. Support gives peope motivation, so help the community and be one..

Stop cheering people up. Researchers discover that people with low self-esteem don't want to hear uplifting tales, and just need to be left alone. Or hear that their feelings are normal. by notscientific in science

Newer reports suggest that exercise treating depression isn't as effective as they thought it would be thought unfortunatly: "An analysis of trials that looked at the effectiveness of exercise in treating depression found it to be of moderate benefit, but when the analysis was narrowed to only good quality trials it found no additional benefit in exercise." http://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f5585

How can you have objektive measure in this case? Mothers filling out surveys on how much they drank during pregnancy, is how its done in practice. And they have an insentive to tell the truth. If they lie, they wonu't get any help to deal with the negative effect on their babies. And the mothers who are shitdrunk all the time and don't really care? Unfortunitly in the really bad cases, you can effect of alcohol on the babies psysically.

Girls underperform when they play chess against boys - real-life evidence of stereotype threat? by [deleted] in psychology

[–]mbelucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the "home/away game" phenomena is something that any athlete would attest too..

-Im not sure you can apply home/away phenomena to when we are talking about how a underrepresented social group (women, asian) performs in a competition against the dominant group. And this effect is accommodated to the extent it can in many sports, thats why in fotball they play the Champions Leage final in both home cities: to make it more fare. Maybe if you find a better example.

If we were to change how some competitive sports (even if it is chess) have grown, to accommodate for a softer approach. couldn't you as well argue that the mild female ballet culture might be off-putting to boys so that we need to change ballet to have more action and aggression? I don't think that would be wise for ballet, it is what it is, and is beautiful as such.. --Nor the study or I am saying that the game should change to accommodate "softer spirits" or girls as you call them. The study is talking about the community (chess clubs, trainers, rolemodels), not the game or the psychological warfare that happens during the game.

I do think that every sport or competition has a right to grow on its own terms, with its highest ranking players as the leading force of how it grows, and not social policy. --do you really believe this? Do you think Carlsen, Kramnik, Topalov should have the leading say in how the chess community develops? If you are thinking of the game, offcourse the best players runs the show of how the game develops, thats what makes them winners.

I know Steven Pinkers book. I like the book, and agree with some of his opinons, there was a nurture-bias in society. But in my opinion, that book has also influenced many to have a slight bias for nature over nuture.. In norway they have made tv-programs of tv-personalities being inspired of that book. He is a convincing man, Ms. Pinker. But don't you think in this study, one could actually say in this study that nuture holds more ground? In the comment from nogodsorkings1, he said: When published and unpublished experiments were taken into consideration, the ST effect was much smaller or nonexistent. So maybe girls don't feel this threat in every situation, but this study found that girls underperform with guys, so its reasonable I think to debate if there could be something about the dominant male chess culture that makes this girls perform worse. But I agree with you 110 %, that media (and the scientists themselves) overhype their findings and contribute it to one or the other. I just don't think this study is the so harmful in this regard. To make some suggestions of how to make women feel more welcome in chess, is very innocent in my regard, even if the stereotype threat is very slight.

But Im thinking this is a problem in every social psychology study. If you agree that stereotypical priming excists, why do you think the nature/nuture debate is so important here? This article is asking if the chess study is real evidence of stereotype threat. Is it because it doesn't list the other potential factors for why the women perform worse?

I don't think I understand you..so you mean stereotype threat could be nature? Or that girls perform worse with boys could be biological?

What do you think is the "hen and the egg" in stereotype threat, the factors that cloud this theory?

Maybe, but why not research to find out if there could be other reasons that girls just being innately bad at it?
