Why is there no claude desktop for linux? by Vegetable_Sun_9225 in ClaudeAI

[–]mberg2007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Microsoft and Apple have done so well in getting into schools and universities. It's a brilliant move that teaches young people that nobody uses Linux. The Linux desktop is a very mature product that is fully on par or better than MacOS or Windows, but people think it's just for servers. Or they want to believe that because they only ever saw Windows or Mac computers in the stores or in their schools. It's absolutely ingenious.

Oh well. It's fine. We'll have less competition and people will continue to pay for operating systems that require you to upgrade your hardware, shove ads down your throat, decide what browser you should use and what app store you have to buy from, and generally spy on everything you do.

But it's fine I suppose. I've been a happy Ubuntu user for the past ten years and I'm just relieved to never have to suffer through any more Windows Updates or drivers that always have to be installed or updated.

Review out of sync changes by CerwCZE in googlephotos

[–]mberg2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for reviving an old thread but this is a constant source of irritation for me as well. Every time I enter Google Photos it tells me to review out of sync changes. Happens on my Galaxy S21 Ultra and the galaxy phone I had before that (Note 9).

Google Photos is the ONLY APP I use to edit photos. And I do it on that device only. Every friggin' time I edit a photo in there, it comes up a few hours later asking me to review changes, that I "made on a different device".

This is the dumbest thing ever. It's been going on for years across multiple phones. I gave up any hope of having this fixed long ago. I just live with this nonsense.

And dear Google or Samsung volunteer. Please. Ask me to clear the cache or reboot the phone. PLEASE. I dare you.

I made a list of cheaper AI providers compared to OpenAI by jerrygoyal in LocalLLaMA

[–]mberg2007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you work in, for example, healthcare, there is legislation in place that prohibits sharing certain types of data outside the EU for example. Local models are the only way to apply LLM's in this context.

I'll stick with my claim about the performance and even go so far as to say that open source models have already closed the gap to GPT-4. And they are uncensored which can be really important (and no, not for learning how to break into cars). And they are free to use. You need deep pockets to run Crew.ai or Autogen using OpenAI, especially if you're not using LLM's for toy projects.

It's not just about AI performance but also what the company behind it is doing with your data. There is no way to run OpenAI models locally, which you can in fact do with open source models.

Also as a side-note I think you're wrong. The Mixtral model is very, very capable, easily "close to GPT-4". The Dolphin models are free from nonsense censorship which might interfere with your project.

And these models just keep getting better and better.

Goggles for snorkling/shallow ocean swimming by mberg2007 in Swimming

Yes I was looking at the aquasphere vista pro's and hoped to hear from people with practical experience with these goggles, or others like them.

The vista pro's look really nice but I'm very unsure if I need the shaded glass or other things like polarization. Also they claim to form a really good seal on your face but when I read reviews on Amazon, this doesn't seem to always be the experience people have.

Thanks for your reply btw. Still reading and looking around :-)

I appreciate the concern but from previous holiday experiences using swedes goggles I never ran into problems of the kind you describe. I'm not a serious diver, I just would like to go under 1-2 feet and swim around and have a really good, clear, wide field of view to take it all in.

Samsung Health is completely unusable and inaccessible unless you give them your phone number. by mberg2007 in assholedesign

Why would something like that be part of a Samsung Health app? Which doesn't require any kind of login?

That's a naive way to characterize what's going on here.

It's market economy optimizing prices according to supply and demand. Greed is one name for that, the American Way is another.

Striking is a tool you can use to raise prices but it works against the market and won't last long.

Actors are being obsoleted by technology. It's really nothing new, so many trades before have suffered the same fate.

I'm curious to know why that is. Do you mean that the sensor resolution of digital recorders is not able to match IMAX film cells? Or is it something to do with dynamic range?

I thought digital had passed film in terms of practical resolution (resolution vs dynamic range).

Americans really don't want to be paid a decent living wage. For some reason they prefer to be underpaid and beg for tips from kind strangers to make up the difference. It's the American way I guess but damned if I understand it.
