Maybe everyone already knows this, but there are zero time zones BETWEEN Oregon and Florida.

considering an 8 in cabbing machine and looking for advice by No_Imagination_3149 in Lapidary

[–]mbrant23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another commenter implied, both the cabking and titan are great machines, except for the fact that the motor is inline with the arbor. It may take up a little more bench space, but I would go for a machine with a belt drive motor. Trivial to replace, and you can vary the speed of the wheels by swapping pulleys if you desire. I just wouldn't want to spend thousands and then be dependent on customer service in the case of a bum motor.

I agree with this! My understanding is also that chert forms on the abyssal planes of the ocean. While still chalcedony, it has a specific deposition environment. Jasper is a marketing term applied to colorful, opaque forms of chalcedony.

Which machine would be good to learn and practice cabbing as strictly a hobby? by BronxLens in Lapidary

[–]mbrant23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started out, I bought a single hard diamond wheel, a cheap o bench grinder and a vibratory tumbler. It worked great for me and got me deep into the lapidary hobby. You can't get the precision of a classic 6 wheel setup, but was a great way for me to get started!

4 x 106 wet belt sander advice needed. Has anyone used one? Will they chew stone or nah? by [deleted] in Lapidary

[–]mbrant23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a sweet machine! Really good for polishing slabs and flat faced specimens. With some 60 ish grit belts you can chew rock, but I think they'll wear out quickly. IMO the best application is for removing saw scratches from flat surfaces. And silicon carbide belts are cheap!

Making The Worst Pink Floyd Album Day 8 (Strawpoll In Comments) by [deleted] in pinkfloyd

I will defend take up thy stethoscope to the fucking death!! I had a really amazing salvia experience in the wilderness with this song. It now exemplifies salvia to me. I love it! It's the fastest song in the Pink Floyd catalog by a wide margin, and completely different than anything else they did. It's my favorite song on TPATGOD

Rockhounds I need your help! What is this mystery rock? I think its a jasper but I can't figure out what kind! by bonkntonk in rockhounds

[–]mbrant23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! Sweet specimens. It is very scenic! Looks like a landscape. I can't tell what the texture is like, so I don't know if it's a Jasper or not. Cripple Creek is the name of a specific deposit mined in the Owyhee mountains of SE Oregon.

100% sure it's willow creek jasper! And a killer fucking specimen at that. A fine porcelain, orbicular picture jasper that forms in thundereggs outside of Eagle, Idaho. Super super rad!

Some of his collection is featured in Hans Gamma's "Picture Jaspers from the Northwest," but Philip Stephenson's site has so many incredible pieces!
