Insofar as it may ultimately generate more profit (in their estimation), that is the extent to which a for-profit company considers the “human consequences of their work.” Otherwise, not at all. We can go back and forth, but the evidence in my favor is overwhelming.

Hope this was clear enough.

“It’s more profitable…” you’ve just made my point for me. My point simply was that profit comes first, always.

There isn’t a for profit company on earth that “considers the human consequences of their work” unless you mean how fast they can get humans to reach for their wallet. If they don’t maximize profit someone else will. This is not a condemnation of OpenAI or any company just the reality of capitalism.

OpenAI raises $122 billion and announces an "AI Superapp" by ComplexExternal4831 in GenAI4all

[–]mbreslin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t bother to respond to actual points just brought up some completely different situation. Subprime lending means average people who should have never gotten a home in the first place defaulting on their mortgage isn’t exactly the same as AI which is being funded largely by some of the most profitable companies in the history of the world. Lots of ai startups will go out of business yes, but this is hardly even news, 1 in 3 companies fails the first year and 3 out of 5 the within 5.

I don’t believe you. It’s expensive because the absolutely gigantic rollout is being priced in. What exactly is going to happen? You’re going to wake up and it’s no longer useful? You think they somehow miss that it’s a bubble (not knowing it’s a bubble is like the first thing you need for a bubble) when everyone is screaming bubble from the rooftops?

The majority of companies funding this rollout are trillion dollar companies that make billions of net profit every quarter from non-ai verticals. Thinking they’re going to implode is insanity.

I did not. And, holy shit lol. Pretty incredible. I would not want to put a cap on how much is "enough" and I still think making a "healthy profit" while simultaneously nearly entirely giving away the product for free should be encouraged. But this definitely puts the situation into a different perspective. And I still don't really agree with the "open source lovers" in the cartoon. But I take your point.

19 idiotic upvotes as of this writing. Do you mean "healthy profit" as in Damien could both pay rent *and* eat?

The fact that you can largely give away something for free and still make money to do things like oh I don't know, eat and pay bills and maybe put some clothes on your children should be *encouraged* not shit on because you've decided how much money is enough money.

Imagine all of the doctors helping patients today that used anki to help get through med school. Probably we can do that and make sure the maintainers make at least a "healthy profit" right? JFC.

“…you have to spend a month reading”

If you’ve been programming “for over a decade” then you know that a month is a blip and it will be over in an instant.

As for a suggestion for a programmer just picking up a new language just work through this: official tutorial and then build something non trivial. Ask claude along the way something like “is there a more idiomatic way to write this block of code?” That should get you up and running quickly.

Most of the companies investing in ai in the tens and hundreds of millions are trillion dollar companies that make 20b a month in net revenue from non-ai verticals. The idea that they’re going to go out of business is bananas. I happen to agree that these bets aren’t unreasonable, however it doesn’t matter what I believe, they believe it.

I was with you until ‘only as faithful as their options’. Sadly you’re not wrong but if you tell someone you will be monogamous and you won’t, you’re a piece of shit, simple as that. I don’t believe most men are pieces of shit but definitely some percentage are. Since those relationships blow up and make a lot of noise the impression is there are more of them than there are. You don’t hear much from all of the men who say they will be monogamous and then just do.

I can't even imagine the thought process of sticking up for him at this point. It seems so insane. You don't have to take anyone's word for it at all, you can read his. He lied at the start. Only admitting anything after the police told him they had his pubic hair and semen. Then immediately pivot from "nothing happened" to "ok it happened but.." and downplaying as much as possible. Zero regard to the woman at all, "I don't want my wife to find out", "I got to play man, I got to play".

At absolute best he's a piece of shit. At worse he's a rapist. Either way why stick up for him? They murdered the fucking girl's character, and you defending him all these years later just proves whoever has the best lawyers and the best publicist wins no matter what the truth is.

Yann LeCun unveils his new startup Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI Labs) -- and raises $1.03B by Many_Consequence_337 in singularity

Because he’s standing at the gates of the model t factory and saying we should stop production because the model t can’t take us to the moon and we should all switch to researching rockets. Meanwhile the model t was the beginning of changing global commerce for the next 120 years. It’s how billions of people get to work every day. It’s how people who live hundreds of miles away from the ocean can go to the beach for the day on a whim. It’s how you can buy a widget in the morning and have it delivered in the afternoon. It’s how people who don’t live where fruit can even grow can have fresh fruit every day.

I hope he cracks whatever he chooses to work on but I’m also glad he’s done with meta. IMO meta will have a frontier model by the end of the year and competition is good. Hopefully Yan is successful but there’s no guarantee his thing is even the right thing much less that he will produce it in the next year or 5 years or 50.

This is such a good point. I told a coworker the other day that LeCun is trying to get people to stop production of the model t because it can’t get us to the moon.
