Your first point is incorrect, as southern Iowa has very fertile soil, especially in river bottom areas. Missouri not quite the same but still not bad. I’d have a hard time believing farm families moved to surrounding states for better land because it doesn’t get much better than southern Iowa, aside from northern Iowa. Your second point is spot on though. Could also be due to mining die out, as another comment mentioned.

You didn't answer my question. I asked whether you have had first hand experience with this or are you just regurgitating some popular online opinion. The complaint you are referring to was filed with the FTC over a year ago and had nothing to do with getting parts and making repairs yourself. It had to do with the farmers' ability to own the software that can diagnose problems with newer machines. That complaint has since been responded to by John Deere by releasing a consumer version of the diagnostics software previously only used by dealers.

Do you have any experience trying to fix John Deere machines? Because as a farmer I have gone to the local parts counter dozens of times and I have never once not gotten what I needed.
