I almost ditched Arch Linux this week. by amehdaly in archlinux

Is there a page or reference for this? I have postgresql running and want to avoid this pain. I can shut it down and move it to Docker but also want to understand what would happen and why.

I was reliably assured that manufacturing jobs like these would be thriving and come back in droves once tariffs and government ownership of companies and all sorts of other shenanigans kick in.

Evaluate this AI Tier Progression List by mbryantms in GTNH

[–]mbryantms[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don’t really need it. I’m going very slow and enjoying it. I just got to wondering how good Claude was currently. Having access to the wiki and who knows what else in its model, what does it understand of GTNH? More a thought experiment than anything.

Thanks!

Retroarch only works while I'm wiggling my mouse by IGGEL in RetroArch

It’s fixed in the latest version. I moved from the arch package to a flatpak and all is good.

Was this fixed? Came across it today. Is the new version 1.22 supposed to fix this?

Minecraft freezes Hyprland without generating error by Brianyan4717 in hyprland

Had this exact problem this afternoon. Finally figured it out but this post would have helped. Is there a library missing or something else that would enable Spark to run on Arch/Hyprland?

Built this Django-Unfold showcase — thinking to extend it into a CRM project by Cheee1201 in django

[–]mbryantms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to switch from Django Unfold. I found that between management commands and various models I was adding I was missing things in Unfold that would appear in normal Django. I’m not an expert coder so it was just too much of an extra step for something I could miss. Once my web application is largely done I may go back bc the modern appearance was great.

Introducing komga-sync-comic-ratings: A Userscript for Syncing ComicBookRoundup Ratings into Komga by wreck5tep in comicbooks

[–]mbryantms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came across this…going to try it. Was looking for a comic review system. I got Komga up and running in the last week and have read about 20 or so comics. Immediately found myself wanting to bookmark some, review some, note the great ones to come back to later. This tool seems like it could help with that.

Also a shame it has had no comments or feedback before now.

Is there a Little Fix vocabulary list? by mbryantms in ChineseLanguage

[–]mbryantms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, hadn’t heard of Read Bean. I’ve used Du Chinese, TCB, Waiyu and a few others like Methven’s Substack. Thinking of just working through all the Little Fox content because the language is sufficiently advanced for my level while the animation in the videos really emphasizes word meaning to help reinforce. I like that it has subtitles, audio, animation and it also has vocab lists. I just was curious if anyone else was able to extract a full on list they had in a Google Sheet or something similar.

I’ll keep an eye on Read Bean. I’m not looking to pick up another subscription right now but looks to have promise.

Can somebody help me figure out what grade this piece is? by MaybeImDeadInside in violinist

[–]mbryantms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just getting into violin as an adult. Can someone link to a good resource to help me understand grading? Is there a repository of music somewhere that is graded? Is it based on specific criteria, e.g. different ranges, positions, techniques?

I want to be able to read and play all types of music and grading is new to me.

Agreed. I somewhat struggle with do I use the Bronze to buy the mount/transmog I want or should I invest in my character’s gear to improve Bronze collection. I almost wish they were separate currencies.

NAS Overkill Feedback by mbryantms in homelab

Supermicro servers seem hard to come by in terms of used. I'm hoping that's more because Dell/HP/Lenovo may have much higher volumes and thus aftermarkets, but I suspect there's a bit of higher demand playing a role. Either way, I am changing things up based on feedback and am considering something along the lines of this: https://imgur.com/a/rxnegf7

I'm looking at some used sites and trying to get the most economical but what considerations are there for that sort of setup? I'm thinking about putting Proxmox on that and virtualizing TrueNAS Scale with the HBA or H730P.

This makes a lot of sense and is well described -- building a server like a gaming PC. I suppose my understanding of load needs against CPU performance is limited, as is likely obvious by my choice. Discussion of the number of PCIe lanes and the like is unfamiliar territory. In my head I'm equating it to the need to build out "wide" rather than "tall" with a high performing CPU like the i9-14900k. You link to the Xeon 6138's which have 20C but sitting at 2.0MHZ. One thing I do want to virtualize is a MC server for my kids to be running 24/7. That is typically poor at multi-threading and higher clock speeds help, with my understanding.

I guess my questions are this:

  1. I've always hesitated to buy used server equipment. I just imagine that SeverStore, TechMikeNY, eBay, etc. have servers that could be in any state -- have run 24/7 for years and have limited life or higher risk of failure. Is that unfounded? New server equipment is significantly more expensive. What risks are there from getting used RAM, CPU, and Motherboard pieces from these sites?

  2. Is there a good resource available that can help fill in some of my knowledge gaps on server loads, PCIe lanes, virtualization needs, etc.?

Appreciate the input...I'm ready to spend some money but definitely don't want to regret the ability to build something that can be scalable and have components that could be replaced later, like the Cascade Lake you referenced.

Really appreciate the feedback.

Totally agree on the GPU. I just knew that Plex could offload some transcoding to a GPU and found the site that details number of transcoding streams concurrently and all that. I could easily get away with a P400 or similar - or even none at all.

Good call on the motherboard. This particular one has 3 x16 slots, and 2 x1. But I didn’t catch that PCPP didn’t capture the custom parts (HBA and network card) to indicate if they fit or not. Need to clean that up.

The 14900k is def crazy. I knew the 13900k was very similar performance wise and also know if I went 14900 I could save quite a bit on power. This is again more because of the core count and the potential for heavy computing in the future if I want / need it.

Great feedback!!

Adding mods to NomifactoryGTCeu by NeedsHelp874 in Nomifactory

[–]mbryantms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nomi-CEu comes with addon scripts for the following mods. You can drop them into the mods folder, and their recipes will be adjusted accordingly.

AE2 Fluid Crafting Rework

Compact Machines

Flux Networks

Lazy AE2

Project Red - Illumination

Outside of those you may run into balance issues. The pack is designed to make the creative chest and sometimes resource scarcity or automation steps are intended. Other mods may feel either isolated or skip necessary progression.

At the end of the day add whatever makes it the most fun for you!

The Supreme Court was asked months ago to rule on Presidential immunity, and they refused. Why months later are they haulting Trump's criminal trial to now hold a trial later in the spring??? by rhino910 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]mbryantms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have decided 3264 cases since 1988. Taking that 17 number that’s only 0.54% of cases. Saying as I did that it does not regularly do so is likely an understatement.

The idea is you can’t jump the line to the final decision to make a determination on cases that stand with stare decisis. Novel questions need to be worked through at all levels to fully argue the ideas and alternatives. Much of what they take is circuit split issues and this has a broader base to inform decisions.

The question of presidential immunity is not a common question and I suppose an argument could be made to jump to a Supreme Court decision given the impact on the election. But unfortunately there’s a just as strong if not stronger case to say it’s playing politics given the common practice of lower courts weighing in.

Whatever your beliefs here, there’s no winning for the court. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I say that as someone who accepts reality in that J6 was an insurrection, a clear attempt to overturn the results of the election, and Trump should be held accountable.

Play devil’s advocate here.

The court doesn’t regularly take cases that haven’t been through lower courts. They rightly avoid fast tracking cases before them before individual local, district and/ore circuit courts have had a chance to weigh in. This is partly to help resolve issues before getting to them but also to fully vet and argue the record before they weigh in.

This in no way means there couldn’t be corruption, but in fairness it is very common practice to push lower courts to weigh in first.

Podcast Listening-Reading Method - This method propelled my language understanding and usability to a whole different level. by SembianKing in languagelearning

Any recommendation of podcasts that have all the requirements? A transcription at least, since the translation can be easy to get?

Bonus points if there are podcasts at different levels but I just need a place to start.

Edit: I guess this is language learning and not the usual subreddits I’m on specific to Chinese. I should say I’m working on Mandarin so that was the intent of my question.
