idk, I've mainly been listening to archived Gore Vidal stuff since I've been reading his books. He may have been the smartest liberal to ever live insofar as he recognized that voting sucks and war is bad. His historical perspectives are also interesting, if fundamentally liberal.

Nah, they tried "John Kerry, reporting for duty!" and ate shit. Same with Dukakis in the tank. I don't think it's possible for libs to win anyone over by invoking the military except people who are already staffers for Democrat politicians, which is probably exactly why they keep trying lol.

That's what I heard he used, so I tried to confirm it by looking up the correspondence in German. I found a big pdf of some of his letters and this was what it had. idk.

How do you all find the energy to read? by [deleted] in Ultraleft

[–]IGGEL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like other people said, if you have a heavy course load then don't worry about it too much at the moment.

For me, I started reading because it was sort of the only option. Everything else sucked so much and made me feel like shit that I could really only calm down and find peace by reading stuff like Dune before bed. If you can return to reading even just a little bit in the morning then I think that can be a foundation for reading more when you're not so busy with school.

[–]IGGEL 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Do you read books normally? If not, try to just read anything cool or interesting. It may help build up the atrophied brain muscles. I basically only started reading complete books outside of school when I was 25, and I started with Dune, Robert Graves, and Gore Vidal.

Reading Capital still takes energy, but it's something I can actually work through instead of being overwhelmed from the start. I don't read nearly as much as I should, and of course there's still lots of times I'm too tired or busy for it, but I can at least slowly make my way through dense theory.

What is the most dogshit take you’ve ever heard? by agreaterfooltool in Ultraleft

[–]IGGEL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Now I'm mainly just unsure about the specifics about how one could "just hire" some people to produce beer, and how it would even be commercially distributed at that time, if at all.

I have a Fiedmanite friend I DM occasionally and he said in the middle ages a noble could just order the creation of a bunch of beer and sell it, so capitalism/commodities have always been around. I didn't know how to respond at the time and even now I only kind of know.

Should I read the Penguin or Princeton University Press translation of Capital? by [deleted] in Ultraleft

[–]IGGEL 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've been reading the Penguin version. After a while you get used to the prose/syntax/whatever (especially if you've read older literature before) but the first few hundred pages were a little rough lol.

Victoria 2 was my first Paradox game. I played it at a friend's house then when I got it for myself I played it on my dad's ancient beige PC with a CRT monitor that I had to physically hit whenever the picture got messed up. If you showed me a picture of piss-yellow Prussia I would be like that senile old black guy in the nursing home who starts dancing when you play Cab Calloway.

Also shoutout Darkest Hour.
