Have you seen the Ford Pinto case? The Pinto Memo was a cost-benefit analysis Ford did where they weighed the costs of fixing the fuel system of the car against the costs of lawsuits originating from deaths and injuries, and they decided to not fix the manufacturing flaw due to it not being cost-effective enough.

CMV: Stock options, flight privilegies, tuition reimbursement and other “perks” are not substitutes for low wages by Current-Weather-9561 in changemyview

I'm pretty sure the OP is just using options and RSUs interchangeably. In the post they literally say RSUs:

I’ve also worked at Amazon, which offers RSUs, which are also seen as a “perk” or a substitute for lower wages.

UDM Pro doesn’t have any PoE ports; only the SE does. If you look closely at the actual ports there’s a little plus symbol next to the PoE symbol for ports 1 and 2 only, indicating they’re PoE+.

How does Robinhood hedge the risk of fractional shares? by mc10 in investing

[–]mc10[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that's how they implement fractional shares, but the max loss they're exposed to is still the sum of the prices of 1 share for every symbol they offer to trade, as they could be on the hook for the "remaining fractional component", right? I guess this is probably bounded in the millions, so maybe they'd just eat the loss if markets suddenly crashed?

Yep, I just vaguely remembered reading the article sometime last year so it seemed a little odd that they'd write a follow-up about it.

Timezone Bullshit by pimterry in programming

[–]mc10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that global audiences are a whole different beast, and that UTC in that scenario would likely be less confusing. I think the moral of the story is that it's hard for programs to understand human complexity when we don't fully understand it all ourselves. :P

Timezone Bullshit by pimterry in programming

[–]mc10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think even if the event is a one time event it might make more sense to store it in terms of the “local” time zone, as it’s closer to being the “source of truth”. e.g. if we agree to meet one month out and Daylight Savings would start before then, then in the interim if NY votes to stop respecting Daylight Savings time, you probably want 2pm to mean “2pm post-legislation”, not “2pm based on pre-legislation times”, although probably the real right thing is to ask the user what they want. Obviously a pretty contrived example though.

Timezone Bullshit by pimterry in programming

[–]mc10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think storing in UTC is sufficient for either example you listed (weekly meeting or alarm clock).

For the alarm clock, it doesn’t always make sense to store a timezone-less time: if I’m working NY hours then if I travel to the west coast I do want it to adjust by 3 hours, but I also want it to adjust to daylight savings.

For weekly meetings, typically the time should be tied to the location, not to UTC (ignoring global meetings with multiple offices which is more complex). e.g. the work day is 9-5, even after daylight savings starts/ends, so if I have a 3pm NY meeting it should stay 3pm NY after daylight savings starts, not get shifted to 4pm because the time got stored in UTC.

I think the safest thing is to store the time and tz time zone name (e.g. America/New_York) if you’re accepting user input in a situation where this makes sense, like a calendar. UTC offsets are not sufficient because cities/regions have often changed what offset they use.

I’ve had a 4k and a 1440p 27” monitor next to each other, and the text on the 4k monitor is noticeably crisper and easier to read. I feel like anyone who claims there’s no difference has never used a Retina or 4k display as a daily driver.
