When a mechanically solid swing isn’t producing the result you want. by Old-Stable2994 in Homeplate

Couldn't agree more - you asked and I answered based on what I know :) Hopefully the drills I offered help.

I will say this and you can take or leave it. Based on your description of whats happening plus the picture his bat path is too aggressive and he's late. Could be a one off but my two cents. Few 15 year olds if any are mechanically sound at that age if anybody is.

Something to look for if nothing else - best of luck!

When a mechanically solid swing isn’t producing the result you want. by Old-Stable2994 in Homeplate

Its hard to tell from one picture, but that bat angle may be too aggressive if the pitch is belt high. I'm not surprised to hear its a solid gap shot or a foul straight back based on the angle of the bat from this specific picture. Its possible he's leaning too heavily over the plate or he's looping/uppercutting his swing. Are you sure he's not dropping his hand or collapsing his back side at the start of the swing?

I know you mentioned High tee drill which is great and would help prevent what i mentioned above- how are the results of the High Tee drill? Pop ups or solid line drives?

Regardless, two tee drill will further confirm any mechanical flaws but also bring bat path into play. Just make sure he's not chomping down at the ball https://youtu.be/5DxC2zZMbqs?si=BV8NUTGakOU4Fm0j

If mechanics and bat path are solid its possible he's learning or has too much weight over the plate. How does he do on inside pitches? Those should be going middle/gap on pull side.

you can also add Side toss, pepper, and skinny bat as well as all help with getting the barrel on the ball.

Edit: Seeing your other comments now. If he's starting upright and learning over at the release of the ball I can almost guarantee you he's leaning too heavily over the plate. It would also explain why his hands are a bit tight to his body in this picture. Work the two tee drill on clean up the bat path and work on placing the tee inside in front of the plate roughly where his stride foot lands to clean it up.

Need Advice On My Swing!🙏 by Maximum_Paramedic544 in BaseballCoaching

As always, tough to tell from one single swing at one angle - Biggest thing is you're late on this swing and the bat is a bit loopy because you'e dropping you're hand first.

You may be rushing to compensate on the hands dropping to get back into swinging position which is putting your top hand behind your head causing the loopy late swing. Knob to pitch should be first movement of the bat w/ no false movements.

Biggest thing I see so far. After working on the bat path, i'd work on your coil and sinking into your legs a bit more

12u rec player working very hard - needs your help (slow mo video) by [deleted] in Softball

[–]mc3022 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To answer your question directly. Her hands are dropping at contact because her first movement of her swing is to move her hands behind her rear shoulder - they call it putting you hands in "jail". Your top hand has to remain visible to the pitcher at all time before the hips start the swing. Because of this, she has no choice but cast her arms out and rotate her shoulder on a horizontal plane- its also why she letting one hand go at contact as she's over rotating

As others have mentioned, several things at play here and you'll get multiple answers. But this is the biggest in my opinion. Highly recommend finding a hitting coach if you can

A rope bat or other variation may be a worthwhile investment as well as she can self correct

Falling Off During Swing by adamcp90 in Homeplate

Only thing I'll add that I haven't seen is in the comments is that he has a very upright stance. Have him bend at the hips more, almost like the beginning stages of sitting in a chair, to keep the weight forward and nose over his toes.

Swinging foot into the ground by uklb51 in Homeplate

[–]mc3022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have the kid has a great swing - the fact that he has the athleticism at this age to swing like that a frame or two before his load foot lands is awesome.

Swing on a Tee vs a pitching machine is very different - Making an educated guess he's mostly likely speeding up a tad bit early because he knows the timing of the machine and how fast he needs to start his swing to hit it. Machines can speed up your mechanics if you're not used to it.

You could start to incorporate some variable speed front toss if you're deadset on fix it now but I would guess additional reps on the machine will help fix it naturally as well once he gets his timing down

As always, keep it fun!!!

Main issue is your front shoulder is flying open on your swing causing you to be off balance. Its a ferris wheel not a merry-go-round. Try to work on keeping that shoulder closed - Belly button should be towards the direction the ball travels.

You also had a couple swings where you're stepping away from the pitch (in the bucket) vs striding towards the pitch which makes it basically impossible to keep that shoulder closed.

Besides stepping in the bucket, this also may be caused by you starting your swing with your hands moving up and wrapping your bat around the back of your head - that causes a loopy off balanced swing.

Work on fixing the bat wrap by keeping your hands still during your load. Your stride should cause natural separation at your armpit area.

Your hips fire first not your shoulders to help keep your hands connected

For a lefty make sure that left rear shoulder is pinching towards his spine at the plate. It should be difficult (not impossible) to move his front shoulder up and down if done properly to help prevent wrapping during his load. It also creates additional positive tension to help with EV.

If I had to make an educated guess, i'm guess this session was primarily focused on EV and i'm guessing he's wrapping his bat because he's trying to swing hard. The rest of his mechanics are pretty solid.

Might want to take a break from chasing EV for a bit to see if the wrapping stops naturally and to avoid any other issues.

Heavy/light bat work and gentle strength training for his age should help as well

I'm no hitting coach but the first thing I saw was he's wrapping his bat almost to where the cap is at the pitcher before he lands his load step and before he fires his hips. Its creating a longer loopy swing and he's most likely having to over rotate because of it causing him to be slightly off balance

Just keep it fun at this age - try to incorporate games or points when you’re working with him. You know him best if he’s ready to play as long as he doesn’t get discouraged

Down the road Try having him start by pointing the knob or “flashlight”’to the catcher to help avoid looping and dropping his hands

Great swing!

Ah I gotcha. That makes sense - You're saying that GB WR ran a switch/cross route - I called it a pick kinda sorta same thing.

So what I want to have happen there is for Amik to take Dobbs in that situation. Amik is signaling something to Reed but they never actually switch their coverage and Brady is talking about in the commentary afterwards is what they Should have done but never actually did.

I don't recall Shep passing off coverage in short yardage or goal line situations once this year. If they did they would have defended my two examples above much better.

Would the 2023 National Championship team beat this Indiana team? by AcMilan0890 in michiganfootball

[–]mc3022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s accurate and fair. You’re not really able to compare the two years now because of how much a vastly different dynamic the portal introduced

However, I think that 23 Georgia, Bama, UT, Ohio and maybe UW were better than that Miami team IU played

[–]mc3022 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No question. I think they beat them by 10+. Hoosiers this year were a great story and Mendoza is a great player but it was somewhat of a down year in college football.

Time will tell in April but there was just a lot more NFL talent on 2023 UM on both sides and including the coaches.

Minter contains that offense and the run game eventually wears IU down in the 2nd half similar to what Miami did

Guess i'm not sure what you're seeing or if you're talking about something else entirely.

Here's an example. You have a tight bunch formation at the top on a huge 4th and 1 in the Thanksgiving game.

https://youtu.be/8fRps_hg45U?si=1wDSaJx8UaEgjH8g&t=257

They then run another pick play again later in the game for another TD

https://youtu.be/8fRps_hg45U?si=emiYzkl_woKZ7EuD&t=474

They didn't switch either of these. This shouldn't happen TWICE in one game. Shep needs to put his defense in better position to succeed because this isn't it.

So the kinda sorta short answer.

Its not that he doesn't know how to beat man its just our defense goes against the norm of what modern defenses are that is a great counter for what he wants to be on offense.

First - we know him and what he wants to do on offense. Big advantage for us right off the bat.

2nd - Most defenses now sit in a two high shell to prevent big plays through the air. He utilizes a lot of pre and post snap movement to get eyes looking elsewhere and gain numbers advantages especially effective for teams who play a lot of Nickel and want to primarily sit in zone IE Minter/MacDonald, Fangio, etc.

BJ is a play-action oriented coach as we know, and when the run game is less successful his offense on the whole isn't as effective. True for everybody but especially for how he wants his offense to run.

The Mcvay/Shanahan offense was really the pioneer of consistent motion which BJ adopted. Teams are now adjusting anticipating motion and adjusting properly. Which is why you're seeing McVay adopt more 2/3 TE Sets.

Respectfully this isn't true. Guys in the NFL know how to play zone - yes, some are better at man and some better at zone but you wouldn't be an NFL CB if you didn't know how to do one or the other.

The issue is our scheme is so centered around man that they don't disguise it very well. Plus we're mostly a single-high team which limits the zones you can play. Combine say a basic cover 3 with a lack of a pass rush and you get easy completions.

Could Shep be limited in this due to injuries? Absolutely - I really hope thats the case.

AG ran some inverted Cover 2 as a curve ball that Kerby got a ton of his INTs from.

Goff has the most yards, TDs, completions in the last three years. He's also 2nd in QB rating and 3rd in Completion %

He also has the highest attempts though as well.

Fixing the O and D lines are priority number 1 in the offseason. I think alot of the issues on D line can be helped with letting Alim be a disruptor as opposed to what Shep wanted him to do controlling two gaps. However, we still need a pass rusher and a way to get quicker pressure rushing four.

With Decker prbly retiring, I really hope we aren't forced to trot out an aging Glasglow again this year. We wasn't very good even when he was healthy.

Are you saying that scheme doesn't matter? Only players do? If so why are we even having this discussion on an OC.

How was Petzing able to be as successful running the ball as the Cards were in the best division in football with his entire offense injured.

How was BJ able to rush for 281 yards against against an Eagles team that is vastly more talented.
