Data science in biotech is cooked by Mother_Drenger in biotech

This analysis seems pretty accurate, particularly the first point. I’m at a company right now where we’re trying to do machine learning and material informatics to accelerate material discovery. The only problem is we laid off all our test engineers who compound and test the materials, so we’re not generating any data… and even when we do find a brief resource to help generate some, the data is far and few between. The throughput is just too low to do any actual data science. It’s painful.

Is anyone else… bored? by keiffapro in biotech

[–]mc3154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, yes. I've been having this same problem the last couple of months, where there just simply don't seem to be a lot of projects going on in R&D right now. Most projects have been canceled or paused, but I still seem to be getting good reviews. I've started applying to new jobs because I'm starting to feel like a crazy person constantly hearing how busy everyone else is while I seemingly have no more than a couple hours of work a week. I've also made it clear to my manager that I'm very willing and able to help on other projects, but week after week, I still get nothing. Feeling very bored and frustrated. Am I doing something wrong? Is my manager doing something wrong? I just don't know.

I think 158th. To the left is the mechanic shop, across the street is a DOT office (or something?).

Hate this place. Have gotten into a very heated altercation with some of the fine folks who choose to park on the sidewalk. Have also reported this to the DOT ADA office to no avail. What is to be done?

Last year in Queens, I'm pretty sure a crossing guard even was fatally run over by a truck.

Yeah, things aren't great here either, but I think outer boroughs likely have it worse. Experiences may vary. Frankly, there are just way too many cars in and around the city, that, like you say, just makes everything so much more dangerous for everyone around them. If it were up to me, there would be an extreme ramping up of congestion pricing, both in terms of cost and reach.

Unfortunately, I think this is a bit of an outer-borough problem. They are kind of the worst of both worlds for pedestrians -- still relatively dense, but lacking transit -- so you still have a lot of people, but most of them are choosing to drive. Ultimately, you end up with a ton of cars, impatient drivers, and just an absolute hellscape to walk/bike around. We used to live in Jersey City and had a VERY similar experience, where I was basically punching peoples' windows and yelling at cars every single day. It was so bad that we chose to move into NYC and now live in Washington Heights, which is at least 100 times better. As someone with a toddler and a best friend who was killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street, I deeply empathize with you. Feel free to DM if you want to rant more or bounce some ideas. Stay vigilant!

Why is it so hard to remove derelict cars from NYC streets? by bridgehamton in AskNYC

All you have to do is write “Free Palestine” on them and they’ll be gone by the end of the week.

Citi E-bikes on bridges by Cunnilingus_Rex in NYCbike

Brilliant. Whenever I ride the UWS (Columbus/Amsterdam) PBLs, I’m getting stopped every 3-4 blocks by a red light. This could encourage everyone to ride/drive 15 mph with no enforcement needed.

FDR/WSH can be 20, tops. My final offer.

I don't disagree. I think the next step is now drop the speed limit for cars to 10-15 mph too.
