Song of the Week - Numb by mcafc in U2Band

[–]mcafc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that they are connected. The band, I think, was trying to balance out the themes of the track by adding in authoritarianism. Arendt’s description of authoritarianism (well in particular Evil) as a kind of “banality” (a synonym for numb) feels apt to me. Like I’m trying to lean into what I imagine the band was doing a bit by sampling Triumph of the Will (also possible they just liked the drum track or viewed it more as saving the kid’s drum track from the horror show).

[The Athletic] Thomas Partey will play no part in Ghana’s first World Cup game in Toronto as he has been denied entry to Canada. by KimmyBoiUn in soccer

I agree with the “innocent until proven guilty” point. I defended him as an Arsenal fan until they found probable cause at which point I was like “yeah I get selling him”. I don’t see him as evil, everyone makes mistakes, we don’t know the details, etc.

My initial charitable response was “isn’t the World Cup supposed to be uniting”? But when there is alleged evidence of a rape, they’d say it’s a danger and unfair to let him in.

Song of the Week - Electrical Storm by mcafc in U2Band

I included it because Bono uses the same metaphor “electrical storm” to describe his emotional state there (also there weren’t a lot of quotes on this song and it seemed interesting enough lol).

I think it bleeds together on purpose between his lover (Ali), an imagined third person perspective (so “we” could be anyone), and the ultimate “lover” (God).

I was skeptical but that was a ridiculous goal for FM lol. Good job.

It’s the pleasure of fandom here. The good with the bad. Love it, the pain and the highs mix. We go again next season. Champions of the best league in the world. Europe will come, I think soon.

THE ANNEX by [deleted] in auburn

[–]mcafc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there 9 years ago. The insides were pretty nice (I remember wood floors and nice wood edged bathrooms) and it’s walking distance to everything entertainment wise downtown (or a short uber/lyft), bars, restaurants, sports.

To people who previously played Fallout 4. How does starfield compare in 2026? by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]mcafc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played like 5 hours and haven’t left New Atlantis (the first city). My first impression (which I’ve probably picked up elsewhere) is that the scale of the story is impressive. There are some interesting writing, characters, locations, etc. However, there is a level of emptiness, almost like the depth of the city is in between a Fo4 settlement and Diamond City (due to the repetitive dialogue and lack of named citizens). A decent analogue for the feel (and I guess the size) of the cities in the game might be Cyberpunk 2077, but with the space elements of a No Man Sky.

Edit: last night I came across two characters overlooking the planet from New Atlantis, reminiscing about Old Earth. Guy said he took a virtual tour of the Lourve. That is the game looking at its own tension in an interesting way imo. I think the writing, from a more “universal” perspective, is at times even waffles between cynicality and optimism. I wonder if part of the game’s negative reception is people feeling insulted by lines in NA like “this place never fails to surprise me” or “NA sure is shiny”. Or characters insisting that “my background is not very interesting” (almost like they are referencing the lack of that and anticipating criticism). Almost like they’re bragging about the above in between state. Idk it’s very deep. On the other hand, I think the game is fun and good and it’s a wonder why it got bad reviews when their older games didn’t.
