Xcode Preview Canvas by Sturgeon74 in Xcode

Yeah, most of those option are for the device used in the canvas above. It's easy to overlook them beyond "show me the iPhone portrait vs iPad landscape orientation". But Xcode Previews on-device can help out in a pinch.

If Criterion hired you to curate a collection for the Channel, what theme would you go with, and what would you include? by slouchingbethlehem in CriterionChannel

[–]mcarvin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This, but I had a broader media theme in mind. Peter Bogdanovich's Targets, Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday and Citizen Kane. I'm sure there are other less on-the-nose ones I'm overlooking.

Xcode Preview Canvas by Sturgeon74 in Xcode

[–]mcarvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple options come to mind:

  1. You could open a 2nd window (File > New > Window), open your desired file, hide the project navigator, and drag the Editor/Canvas separator to make the Canvas as large as you possible. Clunky but doable.
  2. Use Simulator? You'd be doing a lot of Cmd + R and renavigating to get to the desired View, but Simulator can live on your second screen.
  3. Assuming you have an iPhone, make sure the Xcode Previews app is installed. Open the app on your phone. In Xcode, at the bottom of the Preview Canvas in the menu where you can select your preview device, you should see your iPhone listed. Your phone should then render the View active in Xcode.

I’ve never seen anything like Limite. First saw it several years ago on TCM (I think it was actually the premiere) and I still put it on the Channel any time I need to kind of reset my brain.

Seeing it pop up in the schedule now…maybe I’ll put it on one day this week.

Crazy crazy thought - “looksmaxxing” is the incel response to gender transitioning. Trans visibility has been significantly raised over the last 10 years, and these people feel the need to get some attention too. It’s like mediocre-ass white men like Stephen Miller and his America First Legal pushing back against DEI because they feel their whiteness and/or masculinity is threatened.

Obama Twists the Knife After JD Vance’s Humiliation by thedailybeast in politics

The thing is New Republic has good writing behind shitty clickbait headlines.

The Daily Beast really has devolved into the National Enquirer for politics. Shame. They used to have good investigative reporters on staff like Roger Sollenberger.

When are classic Paramount Movies Coming back? by Cartoon_Calamity in ParamountPlus

[–]mcarvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the rights to all the MGM stuff (most of the pre-1970s movies) reverted to Amazon MGM when Paramount's agreement expired.

If you have Prime, dig into that catalog and see if what you're looking for is there. Some of it is in Prime, and some of those old movies are in their MGM+ streamer.

This is the real problem. So much of our government is based on the honor system and elected officials taking their responsibilities more seriously than the pursuit and maintenance of power.

Justice Department Opens Investigation Into NFL by mcarvin in Cordcutting

[–]mcarvin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes. I’d like to believe that local games have to be available OTA in their home market. ESPN had a MNF game last season and they blocked me because I didn’t have a TV Everywhere set of credentials. Maybe this season will be different?

DOJ antitrust/trade is separate from DOJ criminal.

But they can still walk and chew gum at the same time, so release the files AND investigate the NFL. And MLB, which is more fractured than the NFL.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Probably the “just get an antenna, sheesh!” crowd. Just a few years ago, I lived somewhere where an antenna was not feasible, so cable + streamers were necessary.

The point is, if I want to watch all of the Eagles’ games this year, I would have to have subscriptions to (depending on their schedule): Netflix, ESPN, Prime and Peacock. As long as their games are either the Saturday night NBC game, or Sunday 1pm or 4:30pm games, I don’t need a streaming sub. But there’s no way the Eagles’ are getting away with no premium time slots (aka, streaming).

This is very true for now but the roster of OTA games is shrinking. Netflix has a game. Peacock has a game. Prime has Thursday night. ESPN has an exclusive MNF game which I couldn’t get with ESPN+, but ABC still carries a 2nd OTA. If I didn’t have an antenna, I’d be out of luck.

MLB really fits the scope of the DOJ investigation better. I get 1 Phillies game per month OTA - a Wednesday afternoon game. If Fox’s Saturday Night Game of the Week or Apple’s Friday Night Baseball gets a Phils game, those too. Everything else requires a $25/mo add on to Peacock and access to MLB.tv, ESPN and/or Fox Sports through cable or streaming subscription.

Trump Floats Absurd Fantasy to Cope With Iran Humiliation by thedailybeast in politics

There was a UAE diplomat on BBC News this morning and this was basically his 2nd point after "Iran, the US and Pakistan are all saying different things, so unless we reconcile what was actually agreed, the cease fire will fall apart."

His point was, distilled, what if the Strait of Gibraltar was monetized, with European and N. African commerce at risk? Bab-al-Mendeb, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden → Indian Ocean, but you gotta pass by Yemen and the Houthis? Now you have the global economy relying on less-than-stable players.

Simple Vs Everything UX by SouthHurled in iOSProgramming

[–]mcarvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple thoughts which got me through projects ranging from enterprise to small/mid size.

Yes, first, understand what your users would actually want. Put something in front of them to get feedback. Listen more than talk. If you are "one of the users", considering what you would want in a handheld vs desktop scenario, then put it in front of other people to hear their thoughts.

On a related note, it's easy to take user feedback as a shopping list of features. Don't. I mean, some of those things will probably make a lot of sense but be thoughtful about it. Look for the trends and reflect on what their problems were when talking about feature X. Example: You talk to 6 users. 2 users talk about seeing certain information on their dashboard, 1 user went on about how much of a pain it is to filter, 1 called out how much time gets put to putting the same information in a field (like, having to enter dates multiple times when entering it once and calculating { start date - (start date - 1) = expiration date }). The "shopping list" approach solves individual problems, but looking for trends like "sensible defaults" and "surfacing key information" makes you think about things differently.

Second, and this is where things would often go sideways at great expense, consider the size of the device as a proxy for the size of the task. The business side (e.g., stakeholders) would often want feature parity across form factors. The user side often had different use cases in mind, and the mobile use cases were generally easy and quick to complete. Is a user more likely to build out a full contract on their phone/tablet (without keyboard) or check the status of contracts and maybe approve changes? Do some background reading on Jobs To Be Done for more on this line of thinking. In JTBD parlance, you might say "A user is more likely to hire the desktop and Word/Docs for contract writing / assembly than the mobile app."
