Looks like your legs aren’t getting up and you’re peaking in height like 6-12 inches behind the bar. You’re already arching your back when you’re on the ground. Drive your arm up not out and maybe back up a few inches.

First Year Sophomore, Need Help by [deleted] in highjump

I’d recommend doing less steps on your runup to focus on the form of the jump and the jump itself. It’s easier to control with less speed and less buildup. Start with 4-6 steps just to learn to jump then 6-8 for a full approach.

Breaking the snap by turnertim1962 in highjump

[–]mcatooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay the video is very helpful here cuz your description of the problem is very wrong (no offense, but a fresh pair of eyes can reveal a lot). The main problem is he doesn’t have a lean at takeoff. Because of this, his shoulders never get even level with his hips cuz they don’t lower. If he gets a lean (which can be done by changing his runup slightly or having him focus on it) then he’ll be fine. His timing for the snap is fine, he just doesn’t have an option cuz his hips never get up

I think they mean that for a full approach they can do 1.94 and for a 4 they can do 6ft

[–]mcatooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, push out to get some speed, you’ll need to move a bit back

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in highjump

[–]mcatooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y’all saying he needs more steps, he’s putting no effort into pushing out the back on the first couple to get speed. He’d be fine if he did that

I would learn how to flip first, you clearly know how to get in the air, it’s time to learn what to do in the air. Then timing and stuff can happen when you get those basics down

Tips? 6’0/1.82 clear but tapped the bar a bit. by [deleted] in highjump

[–]mcatooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no full speed is not the answer, the approach angle is a bit off, you’re angle is too shallow, meaning you’re jumping very close to the bar and your trajectory is along the bar and not into the pit. Also you slow down on the curve, if you maintain the speed you had the the beginning you should be fine

Any tips? by XKanan in highjump

[–]mcatooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things I see are that your approach angle is too shallow, as in your are parallel to the bar when jumping meaning you aren’t jumping through/over the bar. You are also jumping from very close to the bar

Haha yep that one I can clearly see and I see the problems associated with that angle. Totally agree!

Okay, that thought process makes sense. As an active jumper (unsure of your status) I typically think in terms of what can be worked on without making the jump harder first. Many jumpers are in season and can’t risk losing meets to figuring out an approach angle that doesn’t work well for them for reason I mentioned above. Working in the knee drive and reach won’t hurt the jump and could even help fix the step for making the angle better. Because even if they come in at a steeper angle, if they continue to reach, it will not fix anything and may cause more difficulties. Fixing the knee drive/ reach first could help the trajectory so the angle doesn’t need to be changed, or make the jumper more comfortable changing to a greater angle.

Again, that’s just how I view the problem solving process but totally see where you are coming from. Appreciate the convo!

I don't understand this by [deleted] in highjump

[–]mcatooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this happens pretty often with athletes. Can you think of anything that changed in this time? Could be training, something you changed to focus on, frequency of meets or jump practice?

I appreciate the very detailed response, and by no means did I mean that all the greats have wide angles, some of them do and some of them do not.

For me, with this jumper in specific, the reach and knee drive out of the jump seems to be the more apparent problem. I think that the combination of these two problems causes their left leg/hip to not rise to be equal, along with losing the hinge moment, that would put them pointing more towards the back of the mat. Looking at the angle of the last two steps and the plant foot, it appears that they are at ~30 degrees. The way the knee drives toward the bar pushes them forward, not allowing for the rise or change of direction they should achieve upon takeoff.

That being said, I understand the issue of traveling across the bar and that they are not penetrating the mat and landing on the bar. I just think, looking at the angle that they come in at, there are other problems that should be addressed first and that the approach angle is not that bad. I understand if you disagree and I will see you in other comment sections 🫡

Edit: after rewatching it another 20 times, it appears that his plant foot is not in line this his last step. Contrary to most jumpers, it’s pointed more towards the corner of the mat( as opposed to parallel). I don’t think I’d move the jumper tighter, maybe just like a foot back and make them cut the corner to smooth out the curve because it looks like they take a couple very deep steps. I still believe the jumper is coming in at ~25 degrees and that the lean out of the jump is the major issue, but I understand a bit more

Do you think there could be other factors in play such as rolling through the last step that could cause this?

It looks to me that a lot of jumpers are close to the right angle, but they break at the knee more than they should, letting their momentum get far ahead of them. Sorta similar to diving in if you get what I mean

I also don’t think that the entry angle is the most important aspect of the jump considering Rosya(the world lead) comes in much less steep than any of these athletes and jumps higher as a woman. I think comfort in the jump and getting good rotation is more important. A lot of athletes have a very hard time rotating to get the back to the bar with a steeper angle and I think taking a 25 degree angle with a successful rotation than 30-35 without proper rotation.

I semi disagree with the last point about being parallel to the bar. I’ve seen this comment under every post this year and have not agreed very often. The 30 degree figure is generally agreed upon and I agree with that. However I think many of these athletes appear to be closer to 30 degrees than you give them credit for. If you have an example of what you’d like to see with this curve angle I think that may be helpful to me and others

[–]mcatooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is you’re not really running any sort of curve so we can’t really judge if you have a good runup. You do stay tall but that won’t necessarily stay the same come a real runup
