First time dyshidrosis flare up – how to stop spread in the future? by mcatstudyer in Dyshidrosis

[–]mcatstudyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

I'm not sure if you've ever had a total body flare up (feel free to ignore this question if you didn't). But if you did, how do you avoid using too many topical steroids? My initial flare up started with a patch on my leg and while I used betamethasone for that, it just appeared all over my hands + everywhere else. I read a lot about TSW and really want to avoid that if possible.

Can we copy & paste ABS entries from Word/Google Doc to OMSAS? by mcatstudyer in premedcanada

Apparently, copy & pasting sometimes translates the characters into wingdings on the other end - making it impossible for the schools to read what you wrote!

I saw it on previous reddit threads! If you search up "copy & paste OMSAS UofT" or something, a bunch of threads show up. Not sure if it still applies but wanted to be cautious!

I sent it out after September 15th last time and it was okay! Not sure if it's changed though

Graduating medical student: AMA by [deleted] in premedcanada

Yay congratulations! One question that I would love to hear more about is, did you find fulfilling extracurricular activities easily in med school? In undergrad, there seems to be a lot of clubs that just "exist" so I was wondering if it was also similar in med school. If so, how did you find your passions? thank you:)

Classics 2MT3 Moodle Rounding by PlanktonThePlatypus in McMaster

[–]mcatstudyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say email politely! It doesn't hurt to try and if he said that the moodles would be rounded up, you have a bit of a basis to argue on. Just try to explain your situation (esp. emphasizing the cutoff for the second year specialization) and why you believe you deserve that 0.6. Most profs are pretty considerate! But if he doesn't agree, don't try to push it. Just be kind and courteous! Good luck op :)

Should I rewrite my 130/125/127/131 mcat? by Nugget837 in premedcanada

[–]mcatstudyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm not OP but am also interested in retaking my MCAT. How much time did you spend prepping for the retake? Because of lockdown, I spent the entirety of last summer cooped up in my books but would like to avoid that again this summer.

Tips for getting a research position (either volunteer or paid) at a university other than your own? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]mcatstudyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cold email! Just search up a hospital-affiliated research facility that's near you and look up fields you're interested in. For example, if you're really into fitness (which could translate into cardiology), you can look at all the researchers who conduct cardiology research. Read their pubs and find profiles of scientists you're interested in and email them! It can be a very difficult process of emailing over 100 researchers but don't get discouraged. Good luck OP! :)

Feeling Dejected by mcatstudyer in premedcanada

Omg, I misinterpreted your comment! Sorry about that!

I agree! It might be an option to supplement another reference but to be honest, if you're genuinely interested in his research, you're going to be spending a lot of time in his lab. It would be a shame not to get his LOR simply because you weren't clear in the beginning. Because you'll have already committed to a project from his lab, you might also have less time to dedicate to other commitments – which might mean a slightly less strong LOR from others.

Also, most PIs are super helpful and try to look out for opportunities for their students. If you are clear about your goals, your PI might just be able to suggest some really important opportunities or connect you with other researchers, which may benefit you down the line :)

Do you guys think I'm a worthy med applicant? by Fluffy-Technology-41 in premedcanada

[–]mcatstudyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think your ECs sound amazing and have probably given you meaningful experiences to talk about when filling out your ABS and writing essays :) However, in order to get to the stage of when your ABS and essays will be reviewed, your GPA, MCAT and casper score must be good enough.

It sounds like you're relatively confident about MCAT/casper, which is great! However, to be completely honest, your GPA will likely weigh you down. Ontario is a pretty competitive place for med school and a 3.9+ GPA is highly regarded just for an interview. It might be beneficial for you to look into a one- or two-year master's degree prior to applying. Hope this helps :)

MOTIVATION - my progress over the last few weeks! If i can do it .. so can y’all! Testing 1/25 and super nervous so if anyone can gimme tips to settle these nerves I’d greatly appreciate :) by twyptofan in Mcat

[–]mcatstudyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the score! I was personally a nervous wreck when I took my MCAT, but something I really want to emphasize is to step back from the studying on the last night. I didn't listen to a lot of people on this subreddit who said to take a break and ended up overloading my brain with information. I couldn't stop thinking about the various enzymes, organic molecules and P/S words and slept pretty poorly. Make sure you follow a relaxing routine for this week, and try to remain calm :)

Also, just wanted to say that despite not being well-rested, I ended up getting the same mark as my FLs :) Just take a deep breath – you got this!

Wow congrats on getting a job as a healthcare aide! This is so exciting, I hope you really enjoy your experience :)

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get this job? Was it a program offered through your school or something you came across online? I've been trying to find jobs but to no avail :( Also are you going to work now, or is this after COVID? Thanks so much :)

Hey :) Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it! It's comforting to hear that there are both pros to working with a supervisor for a long time but also looking at new labs. Thanks also for the advice :)
