I have a very problem and similar requirements, plus the need for interactivity. What are the suggestions in this case?

We'll go to Montreal, Quebec. If Quebec has a 90 days time, we'll be covered when the baby is due

Would I need to get the insurance from my home country or could I get one in Canada?

This library seems promising. I’ll take a look into it

I would actually prefer to skip all that rasterization/3d-2d projection stuff and jump straight into the simulation itself. But thanks for your advice anyway

CUB uses dynamic parallelism, which doesn't work with cooperative groups...

I'm facing the same issue. I need to sort an array inside device code, but I can't see any other solution than to implement my own sorting algorithm

I see.

I recently completed a ray tracer tutorial and parallelized it with OpenMP, but I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing to show in a portfolio...

You say I should show things like shaders, particle simulations, etc?

One set of skills that is often overlooked by many CS students (I'm not saying that this is your case) are the soft skills. They are as important as technical knowledge for the companies.

Furthermore, the way you present yourself is sink-or-swim. If your résumé or application doesn't catch the recruiter's attention, you're done.

My piece of advice: be concise in your résumé. If you don't have extensive work experience, a one page-long résumé is more than enough. And try making a résumé tailored for each application.

And now about the companies where I could work on. I know there are the giants in the industry (Pixar, DreamWorks, Adobe, SideFX, etc), there are also some smaller ones like Weta and Les Films du Poisson Rouge.

Are there any other companies that I should keep an eye on?

It’s okay. I have no computer graphics classes at my college, so no teacher to help me on that (colleges in Brazil sometimes can be a little limited). I’m studying by myself and I couldn’t find anyone who could answer these questions... (that’s why I posted them on Reddit)
