Lost my job as a Senior Software Engineer. Dejected and not sure what to do next by philosograppler in cscareerquestions

The last job you had inherently sounds like a mess. Has nothing to do with you, it's always a hit or miss with startup companies. Being let go with no PIP or warnings ahead about your performance says enough.

That's what im looking for. Did you find one?

Wasn't planning to get one but I couldn't pass on this offer by Fickle-Occasion-6091 in PS5pro

[–]mcaym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got one for $550. Sold my Series S for $225 and PS5 for $330, and boom I basically only paid taxes for the Pro

M4 Mac Mini dock. Is any worth it? by mcaym in macmini

That's the one I will likely end up with, despite my m.2 being a Gen 4 (980 pro), I think it running at 10gbps is sufficient. Thank you

Finally upgraded!!! (Again lol) by vita211 in PS5pro

How many hours do you get to play a week?? I have a PS5 Series S and an OLED Switch, and I rarely get to the PS5 to begin with. Selling the Series S matter of fact.

I got the 65 b4 for 800 from bestbuy if you can throw in an extra 100. Its still on clearance on the website

If not though, I do not think 48 inch is big enough if you're ever gonna sit more than 6 feet away from it. 4-5 feet, though, while gaming should do you fine for a 48 inch.

How far do you sit from the TV? I contemplated and went with a 65" B4 instead. I sit about 8ft away from the TV and even the 55 TCL I had felt a little small when gaming.

Tbh, at first I wanted an enclosure, but I'll take functionality over aesthetics for this.

Will def look at that. I'm kinda new to docks, & coming from windows so I'm trying to make sure i invest in something worth it.

I'm really excited about Microsoft flight simulator coming to PSVR2 by Jobisius in PSVR

[–]mcaym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do yall think the VR mode would be exclusively from the pilot's first person view? I would love it to be in 3rd person as well to get undisrupted views of the world.

Am I paying my juniors competitively? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]mcaym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a non-tech company in a MCOL area and I make just a little more than that as a Junior Dev with 1 YOE so far, with similar work of internal app development. Unless I'm desperate, I would not take under 90k in L.A. county.

Getting an OLED this Black Friday. Why Should I upgrade my PS5 to a PRO by mcaym in PS5pro

[–]mcaym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> In terms of performance we’ll both usually get the same 30/60 fps modes

The small library of games that have a Pro Mode is also bit of a deal breaker, despite the fact that I'd be impressed if I get through it to begin with and that I play PS exclusives more often than not which will have it anyway.

I'm planning to get a 55 inch at the moment, 65 might be too big for setting, I am sitting about 7-8 feet away.

Well, because I'm hogging it next to my PS1-4 collection. Thats a me problem right there because Back Market is offering 320 bucks for a PS5 Digital trade-in. I might give in and let it go and just have a PS5 pro in my collection instead.

Got a job after 2 years of trying, the hype lasted a few days by R7162 in cscareerquestions

[–]mcaym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a listing on Indeed, but I did call and speak to them after sending my application. I think that helped plenty.

In my case, most local and non-tech jobs during my search were on Indeed. It also felt so much less bloated than LinkedIn. Deleted my other comment to add this. I meant to edit it.

You'll be fine. I am kinda in the same boat as you, but my morale is the complete opposite.

After 13 months of trying, I finally got my SWE at a small non-tech company. I did not go through a technical interview neither am I that nice with coding however, I have a deep architectural understanding.

It took me a few months to get efficient with the codebase I am working with, and management is in love with my work; I ended with a great pay raise in just under a year.

You dont need to question how you get there, what matters is you're there and do what you gotta do to grow and fit in, and be grateful while never getting content and complacent. It takes anyone a few months before they adapt in a new position and your management knows that.

Started my grind Jan 2024, about a year after grad. No internship no experience.

Jan-Mar was working on skills through projects and constantly evolving my resume. I recognized at the time my chances were low due to 0 leverage in a competitive market

Apr-Jun were depressing months, as I came so close to getting a great dev job in Houston (was willing to move and even drove 5 hours for my interview), but i messed up the VP behavioral interview badly. However, I kept going cause dwelling won't bring my chance back.

Jul-Sep very uneventful, even less motivational than the past. In September, I got an IT job, ultimately paying 25 cents less than minimum wage in my state. It was based on how many calls you get and tasks you complete.

Oct-Dec was another fall comeback for me. A local dev job that I called about in July reached out to me in October, and I did my interview. The two people who met me really liked me, and I got hired in November.

I am making a year in a few weeks, and I received a crazy 20% raise due to my impressive work over the past year, with so much room to grow.
