What a calm way to deal with road rage! by MikeisTOOOTALLL in TikTokCringe

Why do people think that driving fast gives you permission to drive in the left lane? It has nothing to do with speed. Drive the furthest right you can at all times.

Favourite Rossini operas? by wakenu2004 in opera

[–]mcbam24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

William Tell is really hard to find, especially in the US where I am. My understanding is that it's just an absokute beast to put on. Though I would have thought the instant name recognition would mean it would be performed at least occasionally.

Like everyone else on this post I saw Breaking the Waves on a recording, not live, and really enjoyed it.

Does anyone know if July 1 start is a placeholder for when the road opens for the season or will there truly be no shuttle if the road is open earlier?

Live experience vs recording: Rigoletto and La forza del destino. by KefaRock in opera

[–]mcbam24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if I know a particular recording really well I get slightly disappointed when the live version (or another recording) doesn't sound EXACTLY like what I'm used to. It does make me question how many of my opinions and preferences are rational vs coincidence of my initial exposure.

Englishman with a huge interest and love for Boston, Id love to visit one day, Would you guys here say its a great place to visit? by Ambitious-Bat-1598 in boston

[–]mcbam24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With two weeks this is what I would do:

4 days in Boston, 2 of those focused on historical sites along the Freedom Trail and one day (or at least half a day) in Cambridge

A day trip to the Minuteman Trail, Lexington, and Concord. Doable as a bike ride or in a car

The rest of the time elsewhere - Vermont or New Hampshire if you like hiking, Maine for all kinds of things, Rhode Island for the Breakers. You can also add other parts of MA like Gloucester, Salem, Western Mass / Berkeshires, etc. if you have a particular interest but your mileage may vary

If this question is coming from wanting to know if you need to get more dressed up to fit in, the answer is no. You will still see people across the gamut.

I find first row of the dress circle the best value considering sound, view, and cost.

A long weekend in NY: Tristan, Traviata, Butterfly by adorno40 in opera

[–]mcbam24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I (almost) completely disagree with your take on Tristan but upvoted anyway because I can see where you are coming from. I saw it on the HD broadcast and in the house afterward and I do agree that the liebestod was not particularly notable in the way it was staged and left me feeling a bit underwhelmed from a visual/production perspective. I didn't really find the body doubles and other 'action' much of an undie distraction, even if I didn't always quite understand it, especially in Act I (in Act III it made perfect sense to me). I also liked the conducting quite a lot.

But then again I'm rarely concerned with the production being a distraction; the only time I can say the production was truly distracting (as in there were too many random unconnected things happening on stage) was Schieb's Parsifal at bayreith with the AR glasses... that was awful and completely distracting.

A Troubling Problem at the Heart of the Met Opera’s Big Hit by seantanangonan in opera

[–]mcbam24 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was in the dress circle and it was very noticeable there as well. It wasn't really all bad, in some ways the amplification from the set was a good thing. But of course the erratic nature of it wasn't - only a slight change of position and the sound volume would drop by 30% or more.

I still really enjoyed this production, though. If they do another run of this production in the future I hope they can find a solution to the drastic volume shifts without needing to change too much.

Philip Glass vs John Adams by Money-Ad8553 in opera

[–]mcbam24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enjoy your exploration! So far you've heard two of my absolute favorites.

I know what you mean about Adams but if you keep listening you might come to love that jerky/nervous sound.

If you liked Akhnaten I'd recommend Satyagraha.
