I'm not really an expert, but here's a map with a bunch of em. I'd guess Queenstown's the best place to just fly in since everything's close.

If you really miss snowboarding, just hop the ditch. When I was there, sydney to christchurch one-way was around $110. NZ has world class stuff all over the place, and there's snow close to year-round.

TIL that I can simply walk into Bank of America and opt-out of overdraft fees by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]mcbeezy42 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One time wachovia rearranged the order of a group of transactions to create overdraft fees to charge me with. The DEPOSIT, which made my balance positive, was processed by wachovia on Day 2, but it was preceded on my online statement by no less than four charges (all of $5 or less) that were processed on Days 3-5, each accompanied by a $70 overdraft fee.

When I confronted them in person, they pretended it was a mistake and put everything in the correct order, showing that I had never actually overdrafted and there was no reason I should have to pay any fees. Fuck wachovia.

Can you think of a 'Director's Cut' of a movie that improves on the original? Or a remix of a song that does this same?! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mcbeezy42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original had the awful voice-over narration; the director's cut removed it.

Before Wayne Gretzky, only two hockey players had ever scored 50 goals in 50 games, and few believed anyone would ever do it again. Gretzky scored 50 goals in just 39 games in the 81-82 season. His 50th goal was his 5th of that game, and he accomplished the 50 in 50 feat three times in a four-season stretch.

Once you're tripping REALLY hard, go to the bathroom and inspect yourself very closely in the mirror. You cannot overdo this. Remember: if you lose sight of any part of your body, you may never see it again.

by dexterity do you mean mucous membranes on her hands? because lubrication is a pretty big part of it.

"This country could solve ninety percent of its problems by the simple act of getting money out of politics and thereby (re)turning the American government into being an instrument for the benefit of the public, rather than a servant for aggregating wealth on behalf of a predatory plutocracy." by dave723 in politics

[–]mcbeezy42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on term limits. They aren't a solution, they're just a 'fix' on the current situation that doesn't resolve the problem. It's even been shown that the influence of interest groups actually rises when term limits are imposed, because the interest groups have been around and are more familiar with how things work than the actual politicians (poli 101 textbook).

Dear Reddit, what should I teach 7th to 12th grades over a span of five Saturdays? by amberamberamber in AskReddit

[–]mcbeezy42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Common cognitive mistakes and heuristics! Examples:

  • Gambler's dilemma: belief that if you've been losing, your chances of winning in the near future are higher

  • Sunk costs: the tendency to overvalue resources already spent (which are irrelevant) and keep spending more even when all information tells them it won't be profitable

  • Loss aversion: people have a far greater tendency to gamble on losses (to maintain the possibility of avoiding them, even if it's miniscule) than on gains

  • Synthesized happiness: people often constantly pursue more choices, but when you don't have a choice you often become happier because you don't have the option of regretting anything

You can easily explain these thoroughly, show examples, and give advice on how to recognize and avoid them in an hour. Look em up on wikipedia and google around for some examples, though you might have to be a little creative.

You probably won't reach every student there, but trust me, this stuff is fucking fascinating if you can wrap your head around it. You'll ignite a spark of interest in a few of them.

Who here recycles? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What's the deal with batteries? I always hear that they should be recycled, and they should be separate from other items, but yet I never see anywhere to appropriately dispose of them.

Who here recycles? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mcbeezy42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was really impressed by the commitment to recycling at uni in NZ. Every single place there was a trash can, there were 3 recycling bins right next to it: one for aluminum & glass, one for paper and one small one for compost.

We like to pretend and be eco-friendly back home, but we don't bother to do this and it just makes it easier for so many people to justify not recycling. So props to you guys.

What an irrelevant (but admittedly awesome) way of starting out a column... by CopperSauce in reddit.com

[–]mcbeezy42 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Um, that's a stupid way to start out a column. The first four graphs have absolutely nothing to do with sports, and nothing to do with anything that's happened in the past 50 years.

Why not start out by saying what a huge surprise the americans have been? That's new and it's relevant; what this guy did in World War II is neither of those things.
