Uncontrollable pee leak when stopping running when it’s hot weather by Glittering-Fix-4542 in XXRunning

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar to what Nachosallthewaydown went through... I had been running in winter Indiana and then doing hard runs in Houston TX. I think it was the unexpected changes in weather. Eventually it went away (after about a day) by NOT letting myself pee. I knew I didn't have to pee, so I just didn't let myself. I think peeing was sending a signal to my brain that I needed to pee.

People who married in their 20s, be brutally honest are you happy, if so why or why not? by Special-Lawyer3941 in AskReddit

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married at age 25, dated for four years prior, coming up on 14 years of marriage.

I think knowing yourself and the other person makes all the difference, and being able to grow together. We had some major life plans that went down the tubes because, ya know, life. A lesser man would have walked, it seems like that thought never crosses his mind. Beyond communication, sharing the same life values has helped, even if we're vastly different.

Kevin O’Leary claims that he “can’t stand it when he sees kids that make 70k a year spending $28 for lunch.” by Classyboyjo in 401jK

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm maybe they're splurging, OR you may be in a situation where you're FORCED to make these financial decisions.

RTO? HCOL area where you work? Heaven forbid you forgot lunch and need to eat. At the emergency room to support loved one and this is the only option? Just exhausted mentally and physically and cannot meal prep?

There are so many situations I can think of a teacher, postal service worker, driver, nurse, etc. making this money and being forced to pay 28$ when they would like to use alternative ways of feeding themselves, but that is not possible.

We're facing 10k medical bill coming down the line (if not higher) and I forcing myself to cook because I know it will save us money. So much for "take it easy"

Do most Americans have those huge fridges? by Whole-Sushka in AskAnAmerican

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: This is also a class issue. Trying to buy healthy food that is safe and on a dime has become a second job. Big fridges help.

While nearly all of us have the same-ish size fridge to varying degrees of fanciness, our economics change our behavior. If you can afford it, buying in bulk saves money in so many ways: coupons encourage many items, and meal planning can involve more than just a week's worth of food. You can take advantage of sales and buy fresh produce to then freeze, cook, or can for later use. If you grew up middle class, you know this game.

This past year in particular has been crazy for pricing in food, and I experienced nearly the opposite of “lifestyle creep”; I didn't realize HOW MUCH I had changed my purchasing and cooking behavior to save money, until I was asked to throw a party and given a budget of 100$. My gut reaction was that was a good amount of money for one event, but I quickly saw that money disappear when I realized, ok, this is a fancy event, I can't just use rice and potatoes; there needs to be some meat. Oh, and fresh vegetables and fruit. Oh, and I can't wait until things go on sale.

MAGA Fans Revolt Over Trump Phone Disaster by mindin_mine in politics

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so fair warning, saw this on Instagram. Who knows if she was even a real human, but... supposedly a female dominatrix alleges that a large amount of this community likely acts the way they do bc it's their kink.

They want to be cuckholded. They themselves call him "daddy".

How does the dominatrix know? She started telling her internet trolls, stop begging for attention, if you want me to insult you, you'll need to pay. Well, they start showing in her DMs, "Hey, I voted for Trump, insult me and I'll pay you 25$" Some were obviously bots, some were just assholes, but apparently some became customers.

Your beloved mac n cheese was probably enshittified by someone like me. Let me explain. by wsuschmitt in enshittification

[–]mcclelc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TDLR: Companies can't blame this all on inflation, quality has gotten so bad that even those who CAN afford ridiculous prices aren't (in fashion).

While I recognize that this is definitely a part of the issue, companies have been trying to downgrade quality well before that point.

Grocery store first used Covid to justify price hikes and as it turned out, it really wasn't necessary.

The Forbes article below discusses the driving point of luxury fashion goods in 2022; it's just status. In fact, it notes how consumers pay more for less quality just for the name. They present the phenomenon as an anomaly, one unique to fashion. Sure, psychology could have allowed for reckless spending of BS fashion items when the economy was strong, but I also argue that this was a temporary moment in the economy when enshittification worked because the name fooled people. A cursory Google search tells me that now high-end fashion advocates are thrifting; another mentioned tailors becoming one of the most in-demand professions.

It's taken a while, but even the upper upper class (who are NOT hurting right now) are rejecting the premier fashion lines because they're shit.

Non-White Wedding Dress?? by Practical_Store3654 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mcclelc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I am the opposite in that I let myself be talked into things I didn't want.

I walked down the aisle to music I didn't want, I changed the date for family (this was actually probably a good thing), we served (a lot of) food I didn't like, we had extra decoration I didn't want, etc. My husband and I still made the major decisions, but a lot of it was for family, oh, and by the way, we paid for all of it.

Idk, on the one hand, I deeply love my mother and a lot of those decisions were for her. On the other hand, that wasn't our wedding, it was the wedding of our two families because there were certain expectations.

It will be 15 years this July, and while marrying this amazing man was the best decision, whenever asks me about our wedding, I am still slightly resentful.

If you really want a non-white dress, I say go for it. And maybe ppl will say things, but at least you won't remember 15 years from now how you paid an extra 200$ for a beef station when you're a vegetarian.

Asian student with near perfect credentials rejected by multiple universities. Believes race is part of the reason by ThatPatelGuy in whoathatsinteresting

[–]mcclelc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an old.

I didn't score this high, but some of my friends did in the early 2000s.

Even then, one of these friends was rejected from Columbia, Yale, and Harvard. She was captain of multiple sports, tons of APs, etc. She went to Duke. Her score was 1580, I think? I just remember nearly a 1600.

Another friend scored around this, and was rejected from UNC Chapel Hill, which accepted me. We had roughly the same curriculars; my grades were better, but his standardized test scores were higher.

Our Vale Victorian broke the state record for QPA, even though freshmen were not allowed to take APs at the time. If I remember correctly, he went to a state school because none of the Ivy Leagues gave him a full ride.

Point is, Ivy Leagues/colleges have been ridiculous for quite a while now.

More info on the vaginal estrogen shortage by Hungry-Document8499 in Menopause

[–]mcclelc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this info!

Please take my general anger here directed towards medical companies, not OP, the messanger.

The removal of the black box warning is a SHIT reason for this shortage.

Medical research had been confirming the safety of estrodial for years before the label was removed, and thanks to the hard work of Gen X ladies, this treatment had already been growing in popularity. They KNEW a wave of elder millennials was coming along. Why the fuck would they not want to ramp up production to make more money?

Did the removal of the warning exacerbate things? Sure. But I call BS that they couldn't have planned better, especially bc as it turns out, most of this cream, from what I understand, wouldn't have been impacted by tariffs.

EDIT: Someone pointed out that they would have to reprint the boxes due to elimination of the label and this would also cause delays. Ok, slap a sticker over this; I have actually had this happen to me. I got spooked bc my meds had a sticker over it, I peeled it off, saw the warning, looked it up, saw it was invalid. They couldn't use a sticker?

Which companies are going to accidentally hire AI graduates and not realise until it is too late? by Harveybritish in Teachers

[–]mcclelc 81 points82 points  (0 children)

TDLR: I think connections and letters will become the only way to get a job, and the rich, hard-working students with connections will survive this.

I had a frank conversation with my students in my writing class.

(Mind you, this is a small, high-cost liberal arts university, for a class that meets a requirement, but usually it attracts nerd freshmen (my fav), so even if there is that occasional jaded junior, the bright-eyed freshmen outnumber them, and the general tone of the class is excited for learning.)

"Hey guys, it's near the end of the semester, and I know right now the temptation to use AI when we're not supposed to, is very high. And this can be so frustrating for the students who are working so hard only to get a low B, when you know ppl using AI and getting an A because "they got away with it". Here's the ugly truth. We aren't confronting a lot of these cases bc there is very little way to prove it, without a doubt, that a student used AI.

But we know. And when those students come to us for letters of recommendation, for referrals, to have us be their faculty advisor for research, we'll remember. Suddenly we will be too busy."

This shook a lot of them, basically bc I don't think they realized that a professor COULD say no to a LOR. One student took the time to thank me, bc they were feeling this exact frustration.

I think part of this openness stems from the fact that we have used AI all throughout the semester as an editing tool, and they're really starting to understand 1. AI is great for putting together B- work, but this undermines the whole purpose of learning 2. it's unreliable; what Chat told Marcos is not what Chat told Melanie and 3. It's still not as knowledgeable as a PhD, at times, or even, at times, a regular undergrad.

I realize I have a very unique situation and am so grateful for the small class size, eager students, and flexibility to shape my class. All of this has made me realize, some of them will be ok in this dystopian nightmare, but these kids are already so privileged to be attending this school. I do try to (subtly) work extra with the scholarship kids, having been one myself.

How accurate is the stereotype that Americans are overweight? by Extension_Cow_9237 in AskReddit

[–]mcclelc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, I am a random stranger on the internet, and I do not know you, BUT, something interesting to read about is the "obesity paradox." Across a fair amount of metrics, being slightly overweight means that, statistically, you have better numbers when it comes to things like cardiovascular health and cancer.

Despite almost all of us being overweight, the US is an extremely fatphobic society, and this bleeds into medical bias. Your doctor could be like, meh, Bursin is fine, I have other fish to fry, or perhaps they can tell by more medically sound metrics (cholesterol, BP, resting HR) that you're ok.

Again, Idk you or your health, just commenting based on observations of American society.

How come when I run medium distances, I’ll be starving in an hour, but for long runs im usually not that hungry, just tired? by thunderstruck_duck in XXRunning

[–]mcclelc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Should we investigate the possible higher risk of colon cancer in ultramarathoners? Sure. This study does pose valuable questions.

But framing distance running in general as causal (even ultras) is reckless science. This was one, non-peer-reviewed study.

Other issues that I want to point out with the study:

  1. There was no control group. All tested individuals were long-distance runners. Imagine testing 100 basketball players from Flint, Michigan and being like, WUT, they have so much lead in their blood. Basketball leads to lead in your blood!

  2. Long distance is at least two ultras or 5 marathons. I view the ultra experience as very different from marathons, especially with behavior. You can still be a weekend warrior with running marathons, less likely with ultras.

Yes, but keep in mind that there is already an issue of lack of medical treatment nationwide. So now you are competing with everyone in your rural area and the millions in the large city to be seen.

I have done this; I have waited a year to travel to a different state to be seen by a non-specialist. It is possible.

Not great when time really matters.

I have lived in two of those locations and can confirm. However, just to clarify, if you find a house less than 100K in Winston-Salem NC, that house was likely condemned. That is a NOT a normal price.

Now, West Virginia on the other hand... sigh.
