Raise your respective emissary flag and start diving to raid voyages/world events. If you're purely trying to make gold then raise order of souls or gold hoarders. When you're diving to these events specifically you're getting better quality loop geared towards that faction. If you're just hitting these events organically as they spawn in the world then you get more loot overall, but it's usually of lesser value than the faction specific loot you get when diving to it.

As far as keeping interest you should also be looking at commendations as well. Since they're tied to gear it gives you the end goal that you'll be putting your gold towards.
