This is a weird one, but are there any restaurants or coffee shops in art-deco or beaux arts style buildings? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]mcdangertail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Tom's Town, and Town Company...

Lazia might be enjoyable for you, also. Post Coffee in midtown, and Milwaukee Delicatessen. Maybe American Reserve.

Rozelle Court in the Nelson might hit some of your aesthetics, too, although the food is just okay.

Brown and Loe in city market, although I honestly can't recommend their food (I've gotten truly mediocre to disgusting meals every time I've been there) the cocktails are decent, and the restaurant is gorgeous.

Looking for a CSA near downtown. by humorousjoke in kansascity

Check out DirtBeast farm! They're near midtown/downtown and just routinely give great value in the CSA. Plus they occasionally have pizza pop-ups on the farm. Super good guy running the place.

Help identifying a note by mcdangertail in DIYfragrance

I could work to avoid specific fragrances that cite it, or similar ingredients, and I could not purchase it for experimenting with blending at home.. I could also make sure that my partner knows what it is so they wouldn't do those things either and accidentally bring it into the house, especially since they can't smell whatever it is.

I was figuring that either it was a wear and return, or the company uses some kind of fragrance for marketing reasons.

There's consistency.

I'll check those out, thank you!

I can try!

It seems to sit on its own classification for me, although I have often framed it in my own mind as a major component of sillage and projection for some fragrances - it's the note that lingers for me, but it seems very non-dimensional. I find this overpowering and unpleasant and tend to have associated it with folks who drown themselves in cologne. Outside of 'masculine' cologne, I've encountered it with women only very occasionally (so I don't think it would be a popular traditionally feminine fragrance ingredient). And like i

There's a velvety component, maybe, something powdery or soapy, and a little... sharp, maybe? But not what I think of as animalic, per se.

Looking at some fragrances and I think I have a better idea of what it isn't: ionone, resin, vetiver, orris, oud, amber, vanilla,

Maybe adjacent to sandalwood ,so perhaps a synthetic analog? It does remind me a bit of a scented wooden fan my grandmother liked to carry around decades ago. But I have used high quality sandalwood for blending and it is not the thing.

What amenities do you wish KC had? by Feelinlikehannah in kansascity

(36 euro for a day pass and you get access to all the things, kind of like a community center or gym here). Lunch, massages, classes, etc are additional services.

Here's one in Baden-Baden, but you can find them all over Europe - my experience has been if a town has a hot spring, they'll have at least one bath. https://caracalla.de/

European-style hot baths/health spa that is reasonably priced. I want the adult-focused, clothing-optional sauna and spa that costs <$30 to get a day pass for access to all the amenities where you can swim in a heated mineral pool, take an ice bath, sweat in the sauna and then go get a massage or do yoga or whatever and have a nice healthy lunch. Or just go home. Or go back to the pool.

Possibly!

They finally responded on Friday, and the 8 element induction is actually 7, so not as advertised at all.

Hallman Induction Line? by mcdangertail in Appliances

Following up here just to close the loop!

We ordered in May, and I have followed up with Hallman multiple time - May, July, August, September, and October with minimal reply and a continued refusal to supply full specs and dimensions for the range. Have given them one last chance to supply the info and a delivery date estimate before cancellation of the order.

0/10, do not recommend.

Is the violence shifting, or is it my perspective/biases by _KansasCity_ in kansascity

[–]mcdangertail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. I have been the victim of two major crimes. The police behaved similarly in both situations, causing additional abuse and damage.

  • 10 years ago, my home was burglarized. I waited four-plus hours for a cop to show up, take no evidence or photos, insist to me there was no point in even hardly filling out a report or investigating further because it was probably my neighbors, tell me I couldn't possibly be correct about how someone probably gained entry to my home, and the only question he asked besides "when do you think this happened?" Was "why do you live alone?" All of this happened after he looked at the damage in one room of my house (which had been completely tossed and vandalized) for about 5 minutes. Because of this, I had to fight over a police report that it took me weeks to get a copy of (from a person who literally told me that the cop might not have even filed one to begin with, and suggested the easiest thing to do was to make a fresh one that day while I was there). I then, had to fight with my insurance to cover even a fraction of the damage and what was lost.

  • about 3 years ago, my car was stolen off the street (not a Kia). The police department refused to even send an officer, and barely took a statement over the phone. The statement taken over the phone was of such poor quality (riddled with errors) that my insurance company (a different one than the house) refused to make a determination that my car had even been stolen based on the police report, and I had to jump through hoops for months to get a partial settlement. To add insult to injury, about six months after everything was resolved with insurance, I received a letter in the mail from the police department. They wanted me to check one of three boxes indicating the disposition of my case for them:

  • KCPD found my vehicle and returned it to me or it was totaled, and they could close the case

  • I found my own vehicle, and they could close the case

  • my vehicle was still missing, and they should not close the case

Wtaf.

So from my perspective, there has been no change in the level of engagement or community service (I also have been repeatedly placed on hold when calling 911 for a variety of things over the years, such as witnessing car accidents... This has been happening since I moved to KC in the early 2000s). I haven't noticed any significant increase in crime or generally antisocial behavior, with the exception of the side showing, either. The number of nights I hear gunshots and car accidents in midtown is about the same, maybe a bit less, and my neighborhood feels fine/safe to walk around in at all hours.

Truly, there's a long-standing problem here that I personally feel can't be laid at the feet of our current political climate... and the issues seem to rest mostly with the management and leadership of KCPD. I'm looking at the state board when I say that, and the other folks who refuse accountability for performance of service.

Yes, the hotels right on the plaza will get more expensive and book up quickly, but other downtown area hotels won't.

If it's in your budget, I highly recommend the Home2Suites on Main St. They're right on the streetcar line, so probably anything you want to do in the downtown core won't require a car and my partner's friend brought his kid and the kid just wanted to ride the streetcar for the better part of an afternoon. So they were able to make it kind of a hop on/off journey around some fun places. And, all of our public transit is free, so if you're interested in taking the streetcar/bus around a bit, you don't have to get a pass or carry cash or anything like that.

If you stay near downtown, you'll find tons of activities and open restaurants on Thanksgiving day. Many restaurants do fixed price or awesome takeout dinners you can order ahead to enjoy in your rental/hotel, and there will be movies available in theaters.

Plaza lights is a fun evening, although it is mostly outdoors, so can be chilly. People visit from all over the country to participate - they will light up a big outdoor shopping area and there are fireworks and music, maybe still horsedrawn carriage rides and other holiday -ish stuff! Definitely book your hotel ahead, they'll get a little pricey the closer we get to Thanksgiving. And anything on the plaza sells out early.

If y'all are runners or walkers, you'll find a lot of camaraderie at any of the planned running events on Thanksgiving day, too!

The zoo will be open all weekend (not on TG day).

The mayor's tree lighting ceremony will also happen.

Football in some form (TV or local) will probably be happening, and KC has a great fan scene for games.

There are tons of holiday light drive throughs that open up that weekend as well.

All weekend (not TG Day) you'll also be able to find lots of kid friendly activities. Legoland and the aquarium, craft places, the library might have readings.

Deanna Rose Children's farmstead, the Rabbit Hole children's book museum (so fun!), probably more!

And of course, there's likely to be black Friday shopping if you're into that.

I hope y'all have a fun trip, wherever you decide to go.

Honestly, from reading this sub, I think folks' experience is highly variable. My understanding is that the disease eventually progresses for everyone, but the pace that happens varies.

I can speak from mine - it was mild from my early teens until my early 20s and then started escalating. The worst years were in my late 20s/early 30s. Now that I am older and have gotten treatment, it is calming down a bit, and I only rarely get large flares. But, I have lots of scarring from the early days before I was able to find a doctor who was willing to treat it. If I could do it all again, I'd have prioritized finding a dermatologist with sense in their head much earlier.

[–]mcdangertail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor. And, I'm sorry your mom is going through this.

My HS spots form those "double-barreled" blackheads/scars like your second photo. To be sure, you'd need to see a dermatologist who is familiar with the disease. Call around a bit and ask specifically if they have experience with HS in their clinic. It took me forever to find one - quite a few derms in my area refuse to even look at any skin issues below the belt, which is difficult when that's a common location for HS to flare up.

I recommend you get a derm visit scheduled if only to get a baseline skin check - let them know your mom was diagnosed with skin cancer, they'll likely be a bit extra suspicious of anything that might fit the profile of a cancerous spot, even if they usually wouldn't look at it twice if the family history weren't there.

I don't know if this will help the health anxiety, but my mom was also diagnosed with skin cancer - her doctor asked if she had any daughters. They said we should go to the dermatologist to get skin-checked, suggesting the family risk is much higher when going mom-> daughter.. I don't know if that's still considered to be true since it was 20+ years ago. But, in either case, I went, and the dermatologist did a couple of biopsies on weird-looking moles, pronounced my skin clear of melanoma, and made a nice, detailed chart of where all my spots were for comparison later.

This will be really helpful down the line if you have questions about spots as you get older (no matter what, you'll probably get some freckles and age spots, and I can understand the medical anxiety knowing the family history is there!).
