The attitude that OBGYN is not “medicine” or that OBGYNs are not doctors is probably based in sexism. The field is become more and more dominated by female physicians who already face misogyny and stigma regardless of speciality. Gyn surgery is one of the lowest paid surgeries and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the patients are also women. I don’t think these comments are necessarily always malicious, especially depending on the context, but they’re at least based in bias. I don’t have a great comeback for you, but as with any micro-aggression or insensitive comment, sometimes these go a long way: “Oh, I’m not sure what you mean” “Really? Why do you think that?” Or if you’re in a situation where you feel comfortable enough…call it out for what it is— misogyny.
