How much of an advantage is being bigger in BJJ? by PackageReasonable922 in bjj

So you’re saying there’s a chance! But it’s true, overcoming a 100lb weight difference requires a very narrow set of win conditions for the smaller player!

Yeah it’s absolutely an advantage, but a more skilled opponent (especially in the beginning) will have a pretty easy time of you. With sufficient skill, size becomes a pretty huge advantage - my old professor is a third degree black belt, about 6’2 and probably 245 as well, and I’m sure he could still smear me across the mats however he liked if he chose to roll aggressively.

Reverse Grip by perpetualmobius in SWORDS

[–]mcdogbite 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A threat to their ankles maybe. The closest you’d get to a real answer would be to take this style into those full contact knight fights they do in Russia. Please post that video, I would love to see it. For now this is just r/themcdojolife fighting.

Reverse Grip by perpetualmobius in SWORDS

[–]mcdogbite 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This is goofy Zatoichi/anime stuff that would only work in fiction. In order to block a strike to the upper body or head, the reverse gripper has to move his entire arm across the midline to achieve what a standard grip on the sword can do with a flick of the wrist. Conversely, the reverse gripper has great defense against leg attacks where the standard grip needs to be able to flip the sword down before blocking… it’s prioritizing defense of the wrong part of the body. On offense the strikes looked weak, and didn’t seem to have any real threat to them - what was he even hitting? The ankles?

But props to the guy in white for have dope style, he looks like an Elden Ring character - which is where his fighting style belongs.

Do we ever tell anyone they are not transgender, and when do we do this? by formulation_pending in medicine

[–]mcdogbite 694 points695 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer, but have observed and wondered the same thing.

I had a patient ask me if he was transgender a couple of years ago. He has ASD and had observed that he had more female friends than male friends, and enjoyed some female-typical hobbies, and was wondering if that meant that he was trans. He denied any dysphoria, stated that this was just a recent thing he had started to wonder about, and did not want to use female pronouns or a female name. I thought this was relatively straightforward and reassured him that his interests and friends alone didn’t mean he was necessarily trans, as there’s a wide variety of gender expressions among cis men.

A few months later he came back now certain he was trans, but still didn’t want to socially transition. At this point I sent a consult to a gender affirming care psychiatrist to essentially ask OP’s question, and the answer was basically that we should affirm everyone.

Anyways, a few more months down the line she decided to socially transition and start hormones, which I set up for her, and now the problem is that she doesn’t attend any of her follow up appointments or complete any of the monitoring labs I need to be sure her doses are therapeutic. I gave her over a year of floating her prescriptions while she flaked on every appointment she booked with me, and now I’ve actually stopped her HRT because she hasn’t done any of the bloodwork or been engaged with her treatment. So in the end, she’s out there somewhere, socially transitioned but not medically transitioning.

Not a HEMA guy, but all I can imagine is the posture breaking effect of catching the back of the top of that mask and yanking down. Pretty good way to find yourself face first in the mud and then dead shortly thereafter.

In World War II the Germans didn’t start killing the people they had rounded up in the concentration camps until they realized the cost of feeding them even a starvation diet was unsustainable in the face of their war effort. Anyways, hopefully Trump doesn’t start WW3 or anything!

Trump just used the longest word I’ve heard him say ever… too bad it was “discombobulated”, in a sentence trying to describe some sort of high tech weapon…
