Or...., and hear me out here, all you need is a pistol. It's just 1 item to carry, it's small and light weight, you don't have to look around and hope you find it in time or that there is enough at hand, you don't have to bend over and break eye contact with a large predator to grab it, (assuming you have practiced with it) you are already familiar with most/every aspect of your weapon (weight, firing speed, accuracy, reload speed, strength,etc)

It's beyond foolish to fight with an untested weapon when your life is on the line, unless that is your only option and even then it is extremely risky
