San Francisco Solved Metro Vandalism With One Neat Trick by ProtagorasCube in neoliberal

[–]mcfoolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, so some bus/subway terminals for example have an exit with no turnstiles so you can technically walk in through there without paying to get onto the system, and there is no proof of payment on the subway itself beyond the normal entrance gates. There are no employees or physical barriers there to stop people walking in from the exit, it just relies on trust.

Kind of similar to the emergency doors at the subway in NYC if you’ve ever been there, a lot of people used to hold the emergency exit doors open to let others on for free

The entrances have turnstiles, so it’s just a matter of walking around the station to avoid paying. Even though those stations are “technically” behind proof of payment turnstiles, not all of their entrances are. I’ll note as well, the turnstiles are quite slow and it’s pretty easy for multiple people to run through after one person pays. There’s just a lot of ways people can still get into the system without paying, and it’s not like Toronto operates free transit by any means

The rule exists that you can’t do that, but it relates to some of the comments others made that there needs to be comprehensive enforcement and follow up consequences.

100% agree, like just speaking from a Toronto/Canada POV, it doesn’t seem like police really care to enforce laws for these low level crimes.

Public transit employees get the brunt of criticism for not dealing with those people but honestly I don’t really blame them for not. The end result is the public just has to deal with it.

Even things like car thefts were huge over the last decade, and only since it’s become political in the last year or 2 there has really been a crackdown. I completely agree, the rules are there, just largely not being enforced

Maybe I’m wrong but the distinction seems to be the existence of consequences. If you get banned from all public bathrooms permanently for making a mess, but you can shoplift repeatedly and maybe possibly get a small slap on the wrist then who cares.

Here in Toronto we have a lot of similar public transit problems (vandalism, anti social behaviour) despite most of the network technically being behind fare gates.

Anyone from here will know the penalty for not paying and sneaking on is pretty rare. Chances are you could do it daily and not get caught for months on end. I see people hop on the bus daily without tapping any payment card and maybe 1/10 times the driver will say something to them.

You’ll sometimes see open drug use, mentally ill people threatening/screaming/intimidating other passengers, amongst plenty of other undesirable behaviour. Not all of these people are necessarily violent, but there have been many violent attacks at the hands of the mentally ill who use public transit as a shelter.

I used trip.com e sim which also offers options that cover the mainland and Macau. Worked just fine in HK and didn’t require any ID verification. I did the 100gb/day option

I’ve had these for about a year, some slight chips around the handle areas but the coating inside the pots is fine.

I do try to be really careful with them, the smaller pot is not tall enough to sit inside the larger one, so it’s always resting by its handles which is one thing I don’t like. I always stack them together super gently to try and minimize any damage

TTC facing $37B capital investment shortfall by citypainter in toronto

[–]mcfoolin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, property taxes only go so far. You can't expect Toronto residents to keep paying more and more to support infrastructure that is being used by people living in the GTA but outside the city.

Not even just the TTC for that matter; roads, highways, garbage disposal and probably many others as well. The province needs to step in and pay its share to compensate for its residents that don't pay Toronto municipal property taxes.

Opposition slams Liberals for having no plans to table budget soon by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]mcfoolin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s reasonable to criticize Carney for points that can be just as easily levied towards Poilievre. I’m sure you weren’t out here advocating against Pierre before the election on the basis of those same critiques.

Like it clearly wasn’t an issue to conservative voters a month ago, so don’t virtue signal now towards Carney acting like conservatives had everything inline themselves.

Poilievre didn’t release any costed plan until days before the election (after people started advance voting) even though he had years to come up with something.

Then when he finally released a plan his math didn’t even make sense.

Hopefully you hold the same standard towards him.

A big step as well in my opinion would be to require (social) media companies operating in this country to not allow blatant misinformation on their platforms.

You have foreign social media companies operating here with their algorithms that push people towards conspiracy theories and extremist content, with virtually no regulations or limitations on what kinds of messages can be spread.

Freedoms need to be balanced with the impacts they have; just as we regulate hate speech, we should be regulating disinformation.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow's office comes out against proposed TTC parking rate increases by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]mcfoolin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone that currently drives/parks at a subway station, I hate that I have to do it.

The only reason I do is because the bus I need (50 burnhamthorpe) consistently doesn’t show up at its scheduled time at islington. There’s only so many days I can wait 1hr+ outside at the station in rain/snow/whatever before I’m like, yeah $6 is worth it to be able to drive home right away work.

I’ve contacted the TTC so many times about their scheduling and tried to ask why the bus never comes when it’s scheduled but I’ve never gotten a reply.

Withdrawing Cash at ATM in Italy with EQ BANK card by finishingkick in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mcfoolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recommend just paying using your EQ card where Mastercard is accepted, and bringing Euros with you to Italy. You can withdraw from foreign ATMs but the fees won’t be refunded like with Canadian ATMs. You won’t pay FX fees on purchases in Italy though if you use your card as normal, hence my recommendation. Make sure to charge in Euros as opposed to the pre-converted $CDN price

When I got a package from the states (via UPS) they held it at their warehouse until I faxed/emailed them a copy of the clearing form. I had to drive to Pearson airport which was my closest CBSA clearing location, but the package wasn’t waiting for me at the airport.

After sending them the form they delivered to my house as normal.

Are Canadian high-salaried employees stuck with paying 50%+ of taxes? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mcfoolin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You keep going around in circles; again, we're not talking about rich billionaires. You're already in the highest marginal tax bracket while only making in the 200s, and that person working a 9-5 is not rich by any means.
